Welcome Nice to have you here! I also use 2x4’s flat side up in the coop. I use natural branches anywhere from 2” to 4” diameter in the run. For sleeping they seem to prefer the flat roosts, in my old coop a few of them actually roosted on 6 inch shelves

I've read so many articles and it gets confusing. We were going to use 2x4s for our roosts but some say that 2 and a half inches is what they need to wrap their feet slightly and their feet do not need to be flat. Im completely new to raising chickens and I want to do it right.

Reading too many opinions about anything can get really confusing. I've discovered, just consider the advice and do what you feel comfortable with. As far as roosts go, I've seen 2x4s both flat and vertical, 2x2s and natural branches used with success. Wood seems to be the best, avoid metal and plastic... that's it!

I used 4x3 garden ties - them ripped them in half before placing them in the coop. They love them so far.
