Roosts stink

I’ve searched the BYC for a bit and can’t find anything addressing my problem. I have two roosts made from branches found in our woods. We have a poop board underneath with PDZ on them—works great. We use the deep litter method—again, great! My problem is that the roosts stink like urine. Is there any way to neutralize this odor. It wouldn’t be so bad if the roosts weren’t at nose level while I’m scooping. Duh. But I figured there may be a way of cleaning them? Any ideas? Thanks.

How long have they been up?
Is the bark still on them?

2 good suggestions below.

Maybe instead of branches, try 2x4's for the roosts.

Replace the branches maybe, either with more branches or a different wood bar.

That's the thing with branches, I don't feel bad about removing and replacing them since they were destined for chipping or tossing into the bramble anyhow.

When you say they stink like urine, did they get peed on by wild animals before you moved them into your chicken area, so they smell like that pee? Or do you just mean that they smell like chicken poop/urates?
