Rose of sharons

hummingbirds are attracted to reds. birds see in ultraviolet colors...they along with bees can see flowers that have been pollinated vs. those which haven't. (they turn a different color in ultraviolet spectrum that we cannot see)

so it's usually a matter of color...i stress USUALLY, there is always that ONE special animal, eh?

p.s. there is a hummingbird that comes to my house that tries to 'eat' my sunglasses! they are red. it gets right up by my eyebrow. a little scary the first go round!

hope your rose of sharon bushes are great!

hang in there lurky, you'll get your buds. I always though of the rose of sharons as a tough tree. We had one that just now got it's leaves. planted them at the end of winter and all grew leaves on time except for this one. Started getting leaves about a week ago.

can you hear me now? :

what state do you live in? Mine would probably do better if we built something to cover them in winter.

Thank you. Am not doing them as bushes though. Have the intention of pruning them out as trees. Saw the way the lady that we got em from had them pruned and thought they looked excellent. Decided that we have to make ours this way as well.

Mine is blooming now. i never see any hummingbirds around it. We do see honey bees each day.

We are presuming it is our honey bees from our hives.

Wow bees are cool. I wish I had the ability to raise those. Am allergic to them. Wish I wasn't, honey has a good market value here these days. People around here appreciate fresh products. Would sell it at the farmers market.

I got blooms on trees and got buzzed by a hummingbird today while looking at blooms. My DW is gonna be so happy. The blooms are purple which I assume the birds can see because they are here. It is exciting to see something you plant do well.

Around here rose of sharon is basically a pretty weed! It comes up everywhere! I treated one double flowering one as a tree and kept it trimmed, but it really wants to be a hedge so its lots of work!

The hummers never really spent time in my ROS's, but they do LOVE trumpet vine!!
