Rotten, no good chicks!

I used to let the chicks eat out of the base, without the plastic quart jar screwed into it. However, last night I came home to a very tired little chick stuck inside the plastic base! I had to push its head, a leg and one shoulder very gently around in there, to free it. So now the jar is screwed onto the base so nobody tries to get into the feeder through the large, round opening any more.

I have yet to go to my big girls brooder and find the feeder still on the paving stone that I place it on. In fact, there have been a few times that one of them has been crafty enough to not only knock the feeder over, but to find a way to separate the base from it's lower bowl portion.

What's even worse is when they kick the shavings around so much that it fills up the bowl of the waterer and all the water siphons out and into their bedding!
