round roost?? like a pine tree with limbs cut back

Great info and logic for a "natural tree limb" roost. This has been a question i'm researching on BYC lately and your post convinces me to go au-natural. Thanks !

sepadippy1 pls go look in thread DIY show us your inventions, few there with cable or line ideas over runs, I have to pick which I can work into my surroundings

Round roosts are the most natural
When a perching bird's legs bend, the tendons on the back of the leg cause the toes to curl, so they can grip while being totally relaxed

Bear Foot Farm is saying what I had always believed was true and backing it up with references. I've been hearing so many mentions of flat 2x4's lately I was looking to see how much support that idea has.

Gail Damerow is a respected author of barnyard reference books. She says "An ideal chicken perch is 2 inches in diameter for large breeds, 1 inch for bantams." She mentions using dowels or old ladders. Nothing about 2x4's.

There were chickens before there was lumber. I'll stick with round.
