Greeting fellow chicken lovers...I have a 4 yr old lav orp with swollen eye - Her eye is not visible as the secondary lens is covering. There is rubbery pu at the back of her eye. No other symptoms. I have given her 3 injections of LA-200 (every other day) and using tetracycline ointment in her eye (3x/day). The swelling has gone down, but she's not making as much progress as I would expect. I also have Tylan 200 on hand. Thoughts on switching her to Tylan...thanks in advance - I'm going to work on removing the rubbery pus later today or tomorrow.

Welcome To BYC

Can you post some photos?
Have you tried removing the pus from the eye - that would be helpful in promoting healing since antibiotics alone will not dry up chicken pus.

I’ve got a young pullet who presented a severely swollen eye. No other symptoms. I’ve been cleaning the eye with black tea and using the tea bag as a warm poultice for several minutes. I can’t figure out what could be causing it. We have tarantulas and I was thinking perhaps she went after one and it shot some hairs into her eye. I’m putting terramycin on the affected eye 2x a day and have been giving her .5 cc of liquamycin IM. Today was day two. She’s not eating or drinking on her own but I got a bit of scrambled egg down her and some water with a syringe. I also gave her a bit of children’s Benadryl today in case it was a reaction to an insect. I’m at a loss. I’ve never seen an eye like this and we have over a hundred chickens. The other eye is perfectly fine and she cocks her head to be able to see. She can walk and stand just fine. Hopefully someone else has experienced this and might have some advice on what it could be?

Hi - I was able to remove the hardened pus but it looks like she has a cataract now! She's been fine and I have her back with the main flock - how is your bird? What breed is she BTW? :)
