I went to Hoover's site and read the description for the BBQ pack. It says any of the male dual purpose breeds available, but when I reviewed those, I couldn't find one that looked like your guy. Maybe they just don't have any of his breed available now, so they aren't pictured. I didn't get their catalog this year. Sometimes that's easier than the website.

That said, the picture they show for the BBQ pack sure looks like your guy. Just wish I could find him in their line up.

You could try calling or emailing them. Let them know you like him and want more, but don't know what he is.

Good luck. He's a hansom dude.
Thanks for looking!! We are thinking the BBQ Special might be mix breeds of meat chickens but not for sure. We have emailed Hoover Hatchery, but they weren't much help either. Definitely wish we were searching for answers closer to the time of realizing he was different rather than 2 years later 😅

Now I'm just curious, so I looked up some dual purpose breeds from other hatcheries.

How does that compare to the ones youDfinitely see the similarities although our male is twice the weight 🙃

Definitely see the similarities!! But our rooster is twice the weight 🙃

This is closer to the size, but the color isn't quite right.

It is possible a couple of the RRs you got took more after one of the lines that make them up than the others. I don't know what breeds go into them exactly, but I think they are a 4 way cross.

Regardless, this is giving me a reason to window shop. :lau
Not a welbar either. He isn’t gold duckwing, he only has one copy of the barring gene, and his type is completely off.

😂 Then this is good. It has definitely been giving us a chance to review other birds for in the future! I can definitely see him look a bit more like that type!

He’s some sort of meat hybrid, actually looks a lot like a freedom ranger. Definitely not a bielefelder.
He is definitely a meat or dual purpose. We have been told by three others that he looks just like the Bielefelders from Meyers and Hoover's but we haven't see any photos of Hoover's breeding Bielefelders to compare. 🤦‍♀️

So, about two years ago we decided to pick up some Freedom Rangers at Rural King. Well, when we arrived they only had chickens called Rudd Rangers. We decide to get 20. Two out of the 20 had chipmunk markings. One was a female who looked similar to a Bielefelder hen. The other one was a male who is the rooster in the photo. **His tail feathers will grow super long then someone in the coop will pull them out at night and frost bite got his comb**
Anyhow, we are curious if there are Rudd Rangers that look similar to our boy since it is hard to find many photos of the birds. (Also he looks A LOT like the new BBQ Special roosters that Hoover Hatchery's is selling). If anyone has an idea of his breed please let us know! He is 10.2 lbs and is twice the size of our other birds like a buff Orpington hen...
P.S. This would not be the first time Hoover Hatchery's chickens would get mixed up. Exp: They sent two Mystic Onyx with their package of black Sex links to Tractor Supply.
I'm not an expert at all, a newbie actually. However I think your rooster definitely looks similar to the photos I've seen of Bielefelders. What did he look like as a chick?

Here’s a bielefelder:

Here’s a few pictures of freedom rangers:

Here’s a Dixie rainbow, another meat hybrid with a coloring similar to the freedom rangers above (not my picture):

Notice that the bielefelder is much more black/gray than red. He’s also lighter overall (since he has two copies of the barring gene rather than one). Also, the bielefelder has a longer back, a fuller tail, and his tail is a lot lower too.
