Ruined, beyond hope cockerel? *Graphic Photos*

To all the GOOD rooster owners: I’ve read many times to not let them crow or mate in your presence. Define presence; 10’, 15’, backyard?

I love to hear the rooster(s) crow and I would especially hate to have to silence him when he crows. I also think seeing the birds’ interaction before mating is very interesting. I’m just not sure of the reasoning behind it and how I would go about accomplishing it.

Suggestions?
Nonsense. My boys do exactly whatever they want. My house pets crow when they can't find me which is kinda cute.

What a great thread! This is my first time keeping a cockerel....he is 18 weeks old and still has yet to crow. I haven’t handled him since he was a chick. He is a scaredy cat right now....afraid of me and the older hens. I hope he ends up being a keeper. I have a 14 year old son, so I will not tolerate a human aggressive Roo!

An occasional crow does not bother me, or one quite a ways off, or one when he really didn't know you were there. However, it is not a good sign, if when you come into the set up, a rooster crows often, puffs up, flaps his wings, looks big and crows again... to me that can be a forerunner to an attack, if not then, then soon.

I know you have seramas, but I’m curious if you have any large fowl? Just asking.
Not anymore. The largest bird here is a silkie. But I've kept them in the past. Just a matter of breed preference. There's 3 breeds I mostly have nowadays- silkie/showgirl, cochin, and of course seramas. I also have modern game bantams and a sebright.

Thanks for all the flogging info. I had tried youtube but the attacks they showed are so quick I couldn't tell what was happening. My Serama roo is only 3 months old and only has little bumps where his spurs will be right now. I only get the little side dance with a few foot pecks before he gets kicked away which ends it.
Here: his 2 ladies have gone to roost since it was late. He wanted to roost on "mommy" for a while but ....

Someone was already there....

That's Poppy, our 2 month old silkie. (Those are $ store safety glasses which allow shoulder sitting)

The seramas haven't accepted her yet... (dear God, let it be a her and not a him!)

That makes a lot of sense, and it may be true in most cases, but it is not always the case. My rooster has crowed in front of me every since he began crowing. Sometime right there in the coop two feet away when I am collecting eggs. It hurts my ears! I never thought anything at all about it. He's 5 1/2 years old now, and he has never been aggressive, never danced around me or snuck up on me or anything. He just likes to crow.
