Run size?

My husband is in the middle of building a 5x4 coop. What would be a good size run for 4 hens? I know bigger is better but what should the minimum be?

Absolute bare minimum, 40 sq ft. Personally I'd go no smaller than 100 (a 10x10 dog kennel), even with a small flock.

If you think along the lines of "what is the minimum" you will likely have many issues down the road. Mostly sanitation and behavioral issues that will be difficult to remedy in a tight space. You will NEVER regret going bigger.
