Runner colors

Hey there Morri. I just hatched some from a black drake and white duck. They are mostly black- but I cant wait to see how much of the white they will keep as they feather up. They are just over two weeks now- so it will be a bit of a wait to see them feather up-- but they will be nice looking.

Awesome I cant wait untill i get those eggs!!! By the way i love your website and im always on it lol i wish i had as many ducks as you!!! Are there any pics of these ducklings on there yet????

Thanks for reminding me- I havent update for I while. I have been working on my second site which is just Runner ducks only. I will try yo get some more pics on toight if i can wing the fight for more time on the computer with my daughter. I will let you know when the new site is up too.

Actually, that won't give you Magpie. White in ducks is recessive. You won't see a blending of the colors at all beyond the normal small amount of white that occurs in a black duck, unless the black parent duck also has recessive white in his genetic make-up. When you mix a white duck with any other color it's often almost impossible to know for sure what you will get because of the way white masks all other colors genetically. You can get almost anything really. You may even get some as you are hoping for, but it won't be because the black and the white result in magpie. They typically don't.

Oh ok thanks CityChicker the lady we are buying them off had three ducklings 1 was black with a little white, 1 was fully white and 1 was magpied. Was this a fluke or will there be at least one in the dozen eggs we ordered?? Thanks

It's hard to say. There is no way to know for sure unless you know what color the parents of the solid white birds were. The white color, when a bird inherits it from both parents, covers up all other colors. The genetic information is still there though, just hidden by the white. When you cross the white bird then to a bird of another color, the recessive color (the white) doesn't show in the first generation, the colors that the white was masking do. It is exciting though, right? (Not knowing what all colors to expect). I have a white Runner hen that I am breeding from for the first time this year and I can't wait to see what colors she throws (since I have no idea her parentage).
