I'm excited to say we have gotten into our routine finally! We have 6 runners, 2 blue and 4 black. Dolly, Loretta and the Supremes - We haven't been able to tell the blacks apart yet, so we'll see who turns out to be Diana! I learned a lot from BYC and from trial and error. Here are a few pics of our pen and house.
A shot of the "pond." I repurposed a shower base I built and used at burning man for the deck and used left over wood from the house for the ramp, they really seem to like it...they are always on it or in the water. I am having good luck with the automatic waterer and feeder. At night I drain/rinse the water bowl and turn off the water. The food dispenser is working well too...at night I sweep up the feed on the deck and just put the top on. Keeps the bugs and moisture out! We've since removed the wind guard around the pen. We had a huge storm come through with 70 knot winds...the wind guard acted as a sail and moved the pen over about a foot, broke some poles. We've also replaced the top with a heavy duty mesh cover. I'm draining the "pond" every 3 days and using the water in my garden. The garden is thriving!! All is well in the pen and garden.
My attempt at fancy vent holes. We have 3 more directly across and vents the width of the house on each side of the roof eave.
Removable wall for easy cleaning. I painted the inside deck and bulkheads with Blackjack #57. So far I have not had any problem using warm water to wipe down. I repurposed the mat from my Ford Escape into the house to make for easier cleaning. The whole house is made of cedar, so the door is light weight, but very sturdy! No health affects on the ducks.
Living on the gulf coast in a highly corrosive environment, we tried to stay away from metal parts. My husband milled these to secure the door. Outside now for almost 4 months in all weather conditions - they work perfectly!!
In and out for the girls. You can see we're using shredded paper with a little dusting of DE. So far so good! I've since removed their food and water at night and it really makes a difference. I'm trying to come up with a way to put water in during the summer months, we stay in the 90's even at night. I am enjoying not having to clean up the mess they make. Hey Loretta, YA NASTY!!!
