A few of my 1 yr olds yesterday.
Loving the stones around the baby pool! Does it help keep things any cleaner, or just looks awesome?

I'm still figuring out pool time. Mine are so little right now, I've been letting them out inside a hay ring with chicken wire around it with a small pan of water. They're out growing it QUICKLY, and I'm going to need to engineer something clever soon.

Ps, totally love your ducks! You're awesome pics in this thread pushed me over the edge to finally get some!

Aww aren't Runner just the best ducks.
Stones do nothing they carry dirt in their mouths to dirty up the pool plus 1 perk is they have to work harder to make mud pies right around the pool with the stones there. lol
I used a cat litter pan with mine till they were old enough for the kiddy pool and at about 3 weeks with supervision and mama ducks watching out for them too they made their way to the kiddy pool just always give them a safe way in and out.

Lol on mud pies! I have two young kids so the ducks should fit right in! :)

Thanks for the advice on the pool! That sounds totally do-able here. Hubby and I are going to work on a new house for them this weekend, adjacent to my chicken house with an attached run. I free range my chickens when I'm around, and I'm hoping to do similar for ducks. Also planning put the kiddie pool (and a couple of old plastic pond liners I have laying around...) close to my garden so I can pump the water to the veggies and keep the pool somewhat clean.

We will see what I actually get done! I'm kinda feeling time crunch watching them grow....

I've just recently gotten into raising ducks but I'm loving every minute with these cute fluff butts! I have four little guys currently that already have personalities even only 3 days old! Runners are some of the most wonderful ducks :D

Does anyone have any hints and tips for a newbie duck owner ?
A few things I have battled so far is the terrible smell of the pen Is there any tricks on ridding of the smell ? Or even dulling it down .
What are treats they like ? Do they like any toys? Any help would sure mean ALOT
THANKS in advance
By pen, if you mean the brooder, I put down a layer of shop towels and replace them twice/thrice a day. If you mean their coop, the floor is flagstone and gravel. I hose their waste off into the floor (where is drains out like a septic field) a MINIMUM of twice a day.
You need to have a certain minimum of square footage per duck or the place will be overly fouled (fowled, pun intended). As for feed, mine just love their 15% protein grower crumbles, they crowd around me when I refill, even when it wasn't empty to begin with.
Their favorite toy is a water heater drain pan ($9.98 Home Depot), it's a durable "kiddie pool", just deep enough for them to do whatever they want and not need a ton of water.
Once I get the garden fenced in they will have a bigger pool.

Best of luck with your ducks, they really are a joy. NEVER a dull moment.
