Hi. My daughter surprised us by sending us 6 Fawn and white Indian Runner duck eggs. I have never hatched ducks. We don't know anything about ducks. She also sent me some chicken hatching eggs. (I have chickens and have hatched chicken eggs before) Is there a thread that talks about incubation chicken and duck eggs together? I only have one small incubator. We also need to learn about housing for these ducks. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Runners are precious. I am not a hatcher, but I check in over at the Thread Formerly Known as Hatch Day is Today to learn about hatching.

And there are Stickies at the top of the forum. Take a look at those.

I am sure that the incubation requirements for chickens is different than that for ducks. Takes a week longer, ducks take longer to finish hatching once they start, humidity is so important toward the end of incubating, so do take a look in those places for advice and help.

Ducklings are different - they are waterfowl. And they are so much fun, so full of personality, so winsome.

I am so happy that theire is a Runner fan Club. They are such great duck and I am happy I found a group to descuse and share information on our ducks. I love all the cute duckling pictures <3

I have 22 runner ducklings, they sure are getting better big fast. I have kept food with them 24/7. I am suspecting they are 2-3 weeks old. My question is should I start to feed them a limited amount? They are getting flock raiser.

It's too early to limit them. Ours went eight or ten weeks before they did not have food, and only during the nighttime, for eight hours or less.

They are growing so rapidly they need all the calories and nutrients you can give them. And always water with food.

Thanks, they are so darn cute that I don't want to make them to fat. We have 1 long pen that we will be dividing it into two just for them. That way we.can make sure they will get plenty of exersize, I think 12x80 is a good size for them.

Help needed!

When I had a close look at my 4 Runners today, I noticed crusty feathers near the eyes & a bit of white, bubbly discharge coming out the corners (worse in some eyes than in others). There also seemed to be a bit of yellow discharge on one or two eyes as well.

They have all day access to dunking water (deep enough to clean head & neck & even to jump in for an all-over cleaning, but no pond), & the water is cleaned/changed regularly.

They are eating, foraging, moving, & breathing normally. I'm searching all forums here & my other duck resources, but hoping for a consistent thread of suggestion, so I know what to try for treatment. This is my first time dealing with health issues in my birds.

Sounds like it could be foamy eye. Are they using the head dunkers?

I would put a few tablespoons per gallon of water in all their water - head dunkers and drinking water - and get something like Veterycin spray that can be used for spraying their faces including their eyes - check the labels.

Another option might be a saline solution - - - cannot remember the proportions right now, so you might want to look that up. Not for them to drink, but to rinse at least around their eyes.

Also could be some kind of dust. Has it been windy and dry there? Changed bedding type?

I don't see them cleaning themselves all that often, which has worried me, though the water is always available during the day. No bedding change. Yes, windy & they are very determined foragers (they are free range during the day). It hasn't been dry.

Were you saying the Veterycin spray be put in the drinking water & dunking water + sprayed on their faces? Didn't quite get that part.

I was thinking I would bring 2 in at a time to the utility tub & give them a good bath, then see what I can find at Tractor Supply as treatment. Vet is closed for the day.
