Feels like I've been posting questions about my ducks a lot recently
. I have three ladies, about a year old this month. They've been very reliable layers with three eggs in the duck house each morning, up until the last two or three weeks or so. At first the drop seemed to be because one of the ladies got broody (no drakes). She seems to have gotten over that thankfully. However I'm only getting one egg each day now.
For the record there are a few new conditions that perhaps are the cause:
1. Number one is I have three new runner ducklings, almost 8 weeks old, that were introduced recently. For several weeks it was just during the day and in their own enclosure within the duck yard. Then it was free ranging daily together but in the brooder at night. They are now entirely outside and sleeping in the duck house at night for the last four nights, although with a hardware cloth divider since we're still not entirely integrated. So that's a big change and I have to assume stressful.
2. I'm also wondering if one or more is molting. They are looking a bit raggedy and I am finding white feathers around their yard; I see them bathe and preen and feathers coming out. They have plenty of clean water with buckets to dip their heads in and drink, plus a pond and a kiddie pool (the ducklings tend to be the bossy ones so I wanted options).
3. Also it's been very hot here in western VA, like so many places, and I assume that's a bit stressful too.
They had been eating Mazuri layer feed with a little maintenance feed but with the new additions, today I put everyone on the Mazuri maintenance with free choice oyster shell since they all want to each each other's food. Everyone gets peas, kale, dried mealworms, etc. for treats in addition to just free ranging around the large duck yard. Everyone is acting normal other than looking raggedy. This is my first summer with adult ducks so I haven't observed a full on molt or anything and am unsure if this is normal.
