Ruskin Roost is raising Quail for the first time!

Hello, Michelle, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I hope the last one makes it.
Thank you for the welcome! The last one unfortunately did not last the night. I am heartbroken, it being my first death. I hope I can learn more here to help avoid unnecessary suffering in the future. The eight remaining are healthy except one has pasty butt so I am diligent with swabbing his bottom. Have a lovely day!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you found the site and joined us! Congrats on your successful hatch! :frow
Thank you! Steep learning curve and I don’t feel very successful with 3 not hatching and one passing away last night, but I am trying to look at the big picture and enjoy the ones I have! I am so glad I found this site. Everyone is so helpful and it feels like a true community!

We have chickens but haven't delved into quail yet. It's on my radar so def keep us posted with your experience! We're also on about 1/4 of an acre...maybe a 1/3? But we have used up all the space with a deck, sitting areas, chicken run, chicken coops, chicken tractor, koi pond, dog run, raised garden beds, perennial beds, fruit trees, ornamentals, compost area, shed, etc. I really want to add rabbits and quail but space is the issue. Have to get creative...or move a tree 😂😂😂 Was originally looking at snowflakes but thinking coturnix are the way to go unless we acquire more land and have the luxury of additional space for less practical breeds that I ❤ but aren't as consistent with eggs nor as easy to keep. So I will live vicariously through you for a bit and see if your experience helps convince my hubby (he's a one dog kind of guy) and we currently have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 18 chickens, a koi pond, 2 aquariums, 2 hamsters, 2 gerbils, 3 mice, and 3 kids 😂😂😂 Post pics of your setup when you get a chance! And welcome to BC!

They are doing great! Thank you! I have one little one that I am keeping an eye on.
I hope the little one you're watching is ok! :fl Keep us updated :)
He is about 3 days “behind” the other chicks. He is small but is getting bigger! The difference was overnight! He has wing feathers on the way! It is day 10. He stays out of the way when the others are crouching, running and trying to fly. I have an area he can run up to, and he goes up there whenever they get a little crazy. I also put some egg yolk there today! He is very confident and adventurous and no one is picking on him. He is a favourite of the Silver, they are always together.
