Russian Orloffs

Mine are actually growing more little brown feathers I noticed them today when I was checking them over! This is the first time i've hatched Orloffs, I know a little bit about their history, but as far as colouring etc. I'm not so up to speed.

Its really too bad you have bantams JC. They have good color and really nice legs. I wish their beards were white though.

NC!!! Gosh its been a while. Where are you and MFB hiding?

Anyone else following down color? I have here what seems to be a trio and both the pullets are the typical ee chipmunk, and the cockerel is very light. I wondered if that was typical.

As far as those way too white Orloffs go... they can come here or make eggs to come here before being eaten :) I think a white Orloff would be amazing to see. Of course, my preference is black.

I'm following down colour :)

I read in a genetics book something about a stripe... I'll see if I can find it for tomorrow. I remember thinking it interesting and relating it to the orloffs, but can't remember what for the life of me.

The chicks seem to be feathering out differently based on down colour. I need to change their leg rings tomorrow night, so I'll be able to study them in more detail.

Hi Ash, just don't have a lot of time online these days. Got into Spanish goats this year and had to get a guard donkey, then a donkey friend for him, then another doeling, then another...they are as addictive as my chickens. lol. I'm waiting for a few clutches to hatch and I'll post updates. Hope to be able to help more people wanting eggs, too. Take care.

Had a guy over here last week buying turkey poults. He also has a flock of chicken hens and wanted a rooster, didn't really care what kind. At first I said I didn't have any, they were all my breeders. But then I thought, no, maybe he would like an Orloff, I've got one I'm not using for breeding. He said he had seen an article on them recently, was it in Backyard Poultry Mag? I don't get it, so not sure. I sold him one of my original 2-year old cocks that I got as hatching eggs from Rare Feathers Farm. This was a beautiful male, very calm disposition as is usual for Orloffs, but too much white. I kind of felt sorry for him because he was all by himself and I was just keeping him as "backup". The man gave me $40 for him and I believe he will have a great home and now a flock of his own, so will be a happy rooster. Now I remember I didn't even take any photos of him as a mature bird

Yes, there was an issue of BYP that was written by Don Shrider. It has pics of birds from a man in OH who I can't find any way but snail to get in touch with. His birds were alright. Did any one but me see that Martha Stewart had an article on all her birds and some were mislabeled? Oh, didn't that get me going. SO told me I sounded like a crazy person and no one who read it cared, but there I was with the mag in my lap and I cared. This might be why I am getting to be known as the crazy chicken lady in my neighborhood.

I didn't see the Martha Stewart article but I totally understand! I hate it when animals are mislabeled in an article. Now on a different Orloff topic, is there any coordinated effort to get the large fowl Russian Orloff into the Standard? Is there an official breed club, anybody who is working towards that goal?
