Russian Orloffs

Have you read any of the standards out of the EU?

Be careful about that cull. Its sounds a lot like Marks... how many times has THAT been typed in BYC? Sorry, but it was what came to mind. Maybe MG? Just saying be careful

About the "Mareks"/lame bird. Last month at our local poultry club meeting, it was discussed that someone had a bird go down/lame, couldn't get up. It was said they thought it was botulism, from feed that got wet in the hot weather. The owner cured the bird by feeding it some food grade charcoal to adsorb the toxins and the bird recovered. Our president said that happens every year here in the heat. People think it is Marek's but it is botulism from wet/spoiled feed. I don't know if that is the case with the bird on this thread, but it is something to consider.

Interesting, a friend of mine in SoCal had a bird go down this summer with similar symptoms, just slowly lost its ability to walk. No other classic Marek's symptoms, it was still perky, eating and drinking, etc, just couldn't walk. After about two weeks she put it down, said there was no signs of lesions or anything abnormal internally, other than a total lack of muscling. Rest of her flock has been fine since. I will have to pass on the botulism info to her.

Ive got to get some pics of mine on here! One hen as a beard to die for. Its so much fuller than the rest i wondered if it was a fault or defect. This is on my mostly brown hen so i hope it turns a nice white as she ages but shes been losing white not gaining. They all have lost except for the motled one. He gained white while one hen is the same as always with more white.

I never heard of this. It might be less of an issue here but I will have to keep this in mind. Thanks for the information.

Gosh I want this bird! Look at that EYE!!! Yes, her head and beard are luscious but that eye!!!!

desertmarcy I had the same happen to one of my Orloff over the beginning of summer, wasn't able to walk at all. I thought one of the bigger roos had crippled her, although she dragged herself around in a small cage I built she only made it for two weeks. She was eating 7 drinking fine.

Rare Feathers Farm that first pic is a really nice Orloff. Love the beard & eyes.

I agree! A very lovely eye. Something some of mine lack. I like a Very strong eye and some of mine are very slight.

This is one of the things i will be looking for in my new stock this spring. Dark color and the good eye. Of course good body is a must for me. I dont like tge squatty birds. Long tall birds lol.
