Russian Orloffs

gander007 I was asking if they where Mahogany ROs since they resembled them in color. desertmarcy's birds are good quality, The chicks are still young, I would grow them out some as they will change considerably

Oh so sorry I thought you were making a statement ......

I was told by the seller who drove out here from Tucson and that took the all day or 18 hours to complete the trip so I would call that all day just to deliver him and he was full grown and had full spurs ....

And this is him and the lady's and yes he is that dark lots of red black and a few white feathers and maybe three half white feathers on each side or wings and if you close you can see his spurs so he is fully developed but right now he is a bit hen pecked and hasn't any neck feathers to speak of ........

So do you really think he is a Mahogany RO if that is the case I could live with that as he is a really mellow Rooster and fairly easy to catch an really tries to avoid a fight unless one of his hens are involved ......

Do you think his chicks would be worth anything in the sellers market that is ??????

I know desertmarcys, RO's are good stock as I just adore them and their mellow personality's ......

Do you know anyone who deals the Mahogany RO's ????

I had to retire the RO's I had as they were 6 to 7 years old and just could not handle the temps p here any more and the best part is the RO's produce egg's in the extreme heat better then any other chicken I have ha up here and the RIR is a close second but still not as good but the RIR's are a bit healthier and less work and not so headstrong .............

I don't think he is mahogany. You might just have gotten one that doesn't have as much spangling.

That is nice to know then he still might work out as a breeder or do you think I should find another Rooster to do the job .....???

I guess that depends on how the offspring turn out from him. You might have to hatch quite a few to pick through, that's what I did. I would still be on the lookout for another male in any case. It is risky having just one, what if something happens to him? Always keep a backup.

gander007 I'm with desertmarcy. Your rooster is not a mahogany but a spangled Orloff with not that much spangling. A mahogany's beard would be all black and the chest would not have white in it I thought the chicks where mahogany since the coloration is what mahogany chicks would look like. Perhaps they are just that deep mahogany color due to the rooster. Give them time to mature, ROs taos change drastically the first year alone. With this breed patience is truly a virtue. The rooster is not bad looking from what I can see, of course I'm only seeing a frontal view and not the overall view of him. It's difficult to judge a bird by a photo as they do not do justice to the bird. BTW, I only know about 3 breeders that have Mahoganys. I have a pair but have yet to gotten a single egg from them.

@vtguania, Thank you I just learned a lot about RO's again and I do understand there are not that many Mahogany breeders out there .....

Now I guess I need to wait and see what they are going to look like and as you said they are a time consuming breed in the waiting game to see what they are going to look like as they seem to change big-time in that first year alone ........

And thank you for the information ......

CalvinHobbes nice looking pullet, looks like she's about 4 or 5 months old. Definitely like the triangular shape on her beard and her spangling is looking good as well.
