Russian Orloffs

Some pics of my crew @ 3 months old:

Koritza, who just started to crow today.

Koritza - nice Russian name meaning "chicken."

Jack (Frost), who has very loose feathers

Nice name "Jack Frost" from a Russian fable.

and my girl Grischa
"Grischa" a nice Russian nickname for "George"

All very lovely ROs!

Thank you Sylvester - on the first one I was actually going for "Cinnamon" since he was cinnamon colored as a baby. But "chicken" works, too!

Your ROs are lovely. I mused over having them for several months but after much research these guys seemed best kept in cooler climates. I have a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana and she loves the cooler days and even the rain but during our humid summers she doesn't do well. Our Silkies will be busily toodling around while she'll dig into the damp soil and pants heavily. She's also been depressed from a molt plus growing in new feathers and hasn't layed in several weeks - stressed in this heat. I don't think it fair to take on another muffed breed in our climate. We have an Orbit Mistand going from dawn to dusk during heatwaves and she'll spend most of the day under it. 2 days of rain this past week and she's been in her element having fun! She'll be in for a rude awakening as the temperatures start soaring again this month! Enjoy your lovely ROs for me!!!

I will!

When I lived in SoCal, (Inland Empire) I don't think I would have had RO either - or it would have been way harder on them and I think big combs really help in hot climates. My Cream Legbar girls always did better in the heat than my muffed, peacombed, fluffy OEs.

We do get hot here, but so far the high is in the mid 90's. And now that we are in Monsoon season, afternoon thunderstorms are usually somewhere and that either gives rain or gusty winds to cool things down. It really cools off nice at night.

It's my first year in New Mexico and my first year with Orloffs. Something new to learn every day.

NM - what a wonderful adventure! In So Cal we just experienced a lot of fires, then rains and thunderstorms too - but nothing feels cool at all - very humid even at night. So of course my poor Ameraucana is lethargic. She is so sweet though. That's why I was thinking about getting an RO since they have similar nice temperaments and even the same muffed faces but after watching our Amer disliking the humidity I decided against another muffed bird - our Amer has extremely thick fluffy downy feathering. Our Silkies' feathers are fluffy but less dense and they actually fare better in temperature extremes. We're adding a Breda pullet juvenile after her quarantine next week so we'll see how she integrates with the outside environment - she has very long feathered shanks but Bredas have no comb whatsoever - only large cavernous nostrils where a comb would normally begin on other chicken breeds.

My young lady just finishing up her molting ..

Still looking a little ruff around the edges .....

Her whisker feathers are just not coming out in the photos ...

She is getting more white in her beard and she is about 3 now ...

She is finally getting tired of getting her photos taken ......

I will take some more photos of her after all the feathers are finished coming in and thank you for looking ........

I like her beak and her brow, Gander! Mine are molting too and look like they have been in a blender!

Thank you FridayYet, ,,,

If you look at the Roo (Buddy) who is in the middle you can see in the shadow his molting makes him look so sad and his two boys one on the left and far right with their feathers look so much bigger oh the other Roo is a Marans just about a year old .......

Now Buddy is a true lover not at all a fighter even with his own off spring ......
