Russian Orloffs

My young lady just finishing up her molting ..

Her whisker feathers are just not coming out in the photos ...

She is getting more white in her beard and she is about 3 now ...

She is finally getting tired of getting her photos taken ......

I will take some more photos of her after all the feathers are finished coming in and thank you for looking ........
Our Ameraucana is finishing her molt in the midst of our humid weather - poor thing. Hot is bad enough for muffed birds but humidity is the pits!!!
What kind of temperatures and air pressures are you experiencing in the desert?

Today temp was 103 and humidity 8.3 most of the afternoon but this is turning out to be a rather cool year as the norm is 125 F degrees days and nights about 118 F degrees but I have only been in Death Valley since 2003 but this is the coolest summer yet .....

I ruled out getting an RO after seeing how miserable our muffed Ameraucana is in our humid temps. As much as we adore our Amer I can't imagine adding another muffed breed to our miserable summers - too many tropical storms bring humidity to our area. Our fluffy Silkies have less dense feathering and weather the climate better than the downy underfeathering of muffed LF. We have a new Breda pullet that we have to integrate outdoors next week and hope she fares better than our poor Amer girl. GaryDean26 in TX gets over 100 to 112 temps and says he finds his smaller lighterweight breeds do better in the heat while his larger dual purpose breeds drop over dead - he thinks having a comb doesn't affect a breed's ability to weather heatwaves as much as the size of the hen. I mean, no chicken likes extreme temps but our fluffy Silkies fare better in heat than our Amer. During cold or rain our Amer does much better but we have to keep the Silkies from getting soaked and cold. We haven't had many cold or rainy days during the drought but I hear El Nino is hitting Calif this year!

A few pictures of my Orloffs.. 20 weeks old. I'm still new to this breed but I'm already hooked!

My only laying pullet just started a week or so ago, and she seems to lay randomly - like every 2-3 days? My cream legbar quit laying about week ago though, not sure why, maybe she's going to molt?

How many Orloffs do you have, Gander?
