Ah I see. Well these girls aren't going into my breeding program as I'll be raising Mahogany's - IF these two eggs I have hatch!! They were given to me (and they're just adorable) and maybe the light is off... they're under a regular light bulb... I'll try and get them out tomorrow in the sun (If I see any!) and take a look

It's ok Bonnie, the APA doesn't even recognize Orloffs anymore at this point, I think there's lots of stuff we can work on with this batch before worrying about their multi-colored legs or their abundance of white feathers!

At least...that's my approach, lol! It's hard, but I'm trying really hard to learn to build the barn before I paint it. I can't wait to see what they mature into type-wise, and what their laying ability is like. I guess a lot of it comes from the fact that I'm looking at these guys as more of a future utility bird for me as opposed to ornamental fowl. I would like to do with Orloffs what was done to Buckeyes, following the ALBC recommendations for selection. Reading about how far those birds came (rather, recovered) in such a short period of time is very inspiring.

Next spring, I would like to be able to get 50-100 or so of these birds from different hatcheries and breeders so i have lots to choose from.

No need to worry about it Wolfwoman. The standard only applies if that's what you're breeding towards.

It's a good way to look at it. I will probably breed a few Spangled just to see (as you said) if they throw a few Mahoganies or not. If they don't then they can just lay beautiful eggs for me

I will be looking closer at the standard for Mahoganies, because that's the ones I fell in love with from the awesome color and the stance of that proud roo!! First, however, we must

I have 4 point-of-lay spangled pullets that have very few spangles...practically none. I also have a spangled roo with less than desired amount of spangles. I was thinking about using them to create my own mahoganies...it would definitely be a great start. But with my crele project underway, I just don't have time to start it this year. Maybe next fall, though. Best of luck with your mahoganies, Wolfwoman!

Here are lots of pics of my youngest pair. These were hold backs from this spring but I'm only keeping the pullet because the cockerel has a little too much white on him...(oh and yes, I need to rake my runs now that the rain has stopped!)
