Russian Orloffs

Pics
Hi all just joined BYC I am an Orloff breeder from the UK. I love the fact there is such a big interest in the Orloff on here its great to see.

Just thought I would add a couple of pics The Orloffs over here although hard to find are I think to a good standard.

Pretty Orloffs you have there.

But they have peaked a question from me. Does the standard in the UK allow for excess white, such as the mostly white "pullet" you have?

I'm just curious about that since our standards here are usually very different from the standards where you are.

Such beautiful yellow legs! It really does make such a big difference in the appearance of the birds.

I keep wondering about excess white, as well. What does that standard in the UK state as far as colors and such? The only standard we ever had here in the US was for black Orloffs. I'm starting to think there may be more genes at work on our spangled Orloffs than just the tri-color modification for the "spangles" or "speckles". The extension of the white is definitely mottling, isn't it?

I did a google search & the one sight that has both is " Natures Hatchery " They will ship a small amount, unlike most that won't ship under 25.. I am looking at ordering some in the spring. I usually order from My Pet Chicken, they R wonderful, but they don't have the Russian orloff's want..

So does Welp, I think both also have Favs. I got mine from Welp and am pretty happy with my little calico chickens. 3 of the 5 pullets I ordered as a "test batch" are usable for me. (Beards, muffs, less white than others I have seen, upright carriage, etc.) The darkest pullet has no head furnishings and funny partridge-like patterns on lot of feathers, and the smallest has extensive white and is clearly a runt, so they will be culled to the layer flock.

I'm planning on ordering more from Welp in the spring.

I got some chicks from Ideal. Of the 2 that didn't die within a week(9 dead, 2 seperate orders), I have one that looks propper. They are both what I'd call "dumpy". No where near the size & vigor of my rocks & orps that hatched the same day. I'd say give Welp a try, or wait and pay the difference for breeder birds. Geez I hope I get some eggs from my bigger birds soon, or I'm just going to give up on the breed.

So UR hens R not laying at all > R they typically bad layers ? or just slow getting started ? Thats bad news about all those chicks dieing, how aweful. We have no Hateries here in NH , at least I haven't found them online. Thanks for the heads up
