In my experience, they lay well their first year and then drop off dramatically after that. They take a long time before they start to lay (about 7-9 months) and do lay well through the coldest parts of their first winter and then sporadically after that. I haven't ever had a broody, either. One plus side is that their eggs are very large.
As far as friendly, yes. All of my hens and my roos are very friendly...two of the older hens are pests!
The roos aren't in your lap friendly but will eat out of my hand.
I see you're in my neck of the woods--I will have chicks later this summer and you could avoid the hatchery stock all together.

We also breed bantam orloff's. We breed to ABA standard and our birds have taken BB and RB at the 2010 Ohio National. I posted some pics of chicks just a couple posts before your request. Lots more pictures on our website too.
We do also have a wait but if you are interested just PM or email us.

That's such a shame to hear, we have several roosters here and not a bit of problem with any of them. They even let my 3YO DS carry them around. I've actually found this breed to be quite personable. BTW, congrats on the wins!
Yeah....I will be spending a lot more time with the two remaining roos I have now that the morning sickness has subsided and I'm a little more mobile.
One is pretty shy and not at all mean. The other two (one I sold this weekend) and the remaining roo with the mediocre beard were/are punks! LOL They will draw blood every time.
I see that! We're trying to time everything perfectly this spring because I feel like I'm getting chicks from all over! 1 dozen mille fleur cochin eggs at the Oregon Swap, and I want those hatched just a few days before I get the hatchery chicks, so I'm getting my chicks the 18th of May, and 2 silkie chicks from Marjerie Best. Haha I'm running all over the place for these guys!
Are you going to the Oregon Swap? I may be interested in a few hatching eggs and we can see out it works out. I just like having the sex guarantee from the hatchery guys
I might be going to Stevenson, though...I have to see if I can find a carpool buddy to split gas and hotel with, first...there's only one hatchery I know of that sells sexed Orloffs (Ideal) and they are anything but....but if you just want them for fun & eating eggs and you can only have hens that would be the way to go...
I just had to chime in!
I have bantam Spangled Orloff eggs that are begging for new homes!
One of my banatam delaware went broody but i can only stuff so many under her and the girls are laying really well.
Oops sorry not them
Little ones.
White ones!
Slightly older ones
The corral
These pics are a couple months old now.
I will give away roos if you pick them up!
PM me if interested.

Yes, they are white Orloffs.
Part of the breeding process to develop these birds was the use of games such as Malay. Thus the fierce, "I'll rip your arm off and beat you with the bloody stump", appearance. They can actually be calm and gentle, but not especially jump in your lap and have a snack kinda birds. And when you give them a treat, they like to think your fingers are part of it too! They just get excited.
