Russian Orloffs

Pics
When my husband and I first decided we were going to take a shot at "the chicken thing" and started researching breeds, I immediately fell in love with Orloffs and put them at the top of my list for a breed we wanted to have a try at. I was really bummed, though, because I quickly discovered that they are next to impossible to find in numbers less than 25 (and we only planned and built to accomodate 5-7)!

So we had to pass for now, but I am hoping to get some Orloffs somewhere/somehow in the next few years. Such nifty chickens.

Oh jeeez.....I reeeaaaally want some Orloffs (banty or standard)....being a chicken n00b, though, not sure how hard would it be to integrate a pair like this into a flock of 4.5 week old chicks...must also go confer with DH.....

I wouldn't integrate them into a flock of young birds....either house them separately or pass on them for now....

While all of my Orloffs (even my breeders) are very non-aggressive towards people, I definitely WOULD NOT try to incorporate this pair into a flock of chicks that are THAT young. But that goes for any breed...it's never good to try to mix birds that have a big difference in age.

I love Orloffs and I'm getting really excited about getting my chicks in September! My local feeder is getting some breeds shipped in on September 1st and Russian Orloffs are one of the breeds included.

They are such pretty birds

Rosto --> nice birds.

i was curious to know if anyone has had any experience with Tinstar Heritage Farm's Orloffs. I am absolutely thrilled with the birds I have hatched from Starbright farms and Kummer poultry, so I don't know if I'll bring in a third line, but for the sake of genetic diversity in a critically endangered breed I may consider it in the future. Just wanted to know of any experiences with these guys.

Thanks and take care
Ivy
