Russian Orloffs

It would be interesting to see how the ones with the darker dorsal stripes feather in comparison to the ones with the lighter ones.

I had one hatch that is nearly blonde with very little striping and the rest have the darker striping. I'll let you know the differences as they mature. I never really thought of observing that... good idea!

Quick question... I notice some of my young Orloffs have pinker combs and some have almost cream colored combs. Does that have anything to do with their sex?

Did I read somewhere on this thread that the lighter colored ones usually end up with more spangling?

This is just what I am hoping more folks will watch and track. Get leg bands a pencil and pad, a camera is better. Blue legbands looked like this. Red like this etc and matured to look like this.
If we can't sex Orloffs until 18 mos or more how reliable is Ideal? Is this an equivalent to 'Industrial' birds?

I have set up a photobucket acct just for that purpose. It is still in the beginning stages, and I have realized I need better pictures of the chicks from different angles, but hopefully it will prove to be useful. I am also trying to dig into the background of individuals strains and where they originated. It has been suggested that most came from a single source, but I am hoping that is not entirely true, MFB's "Roberts" strain being one example of a non-Flannery strain. I am hoping to find more.

MFB made a good point about vent sexing and pullets in a previous post and I have to think she meant 18 weeks. I believe you may have cockerels that crow 4-5 months, but I have yet to have a pullet lay that early. Mine have been more like 6-7 months to lay.

18-20 weeks to reliably sex them for me since I don't know how to vent sex chicks. Mine start laying at 5-1/2 to 6 months.

Okay, brain fart moment. Sorry folks. A lot going on here. I have tried vent sexing. I am not real good at it.

NC thank goodness you are doing this work! Please, keep it up.
