Hey Dennis, Welcome.

I got an email I didn't expect from a woman I had contacted about a month ago regarding keeping Orloffs and if she still did etc. Well, she told me then she had a few but they were older and just pets. Out of the blue she emailed me and told me she had a surprise hatch that included Orloffs. She offered me these two for free as she is done with the breed and focusing on other things. Hers were from a breeder, she thinks in Michigan. Anyhow, point is that there are two fuzzies coming here to nudge out the rather poor stock I have currently. Adding that with the eggs I have on order and the cockerel/roosters I have coming I might have a chance to raise Orloffs here without shame.

I sure wish you lived closer, I've got a few pretty nice grown birds I'd give you too.

I'm culling hard but there are just too many here right now.

Lost about 40 very small chicks a couple of night ago to a freak thunderstorm. Blew up out of nowhere, terrible wind, driving rain and the breaker to the outdoor brooders got tripped due to a lightning strike.

Farming ain't for the faint of heart.

Ugh... So sorry to hear that! You're right, it's definitely not easy! We had a storm here the other week and my older chicks got drenched. Luckily I was able to throw them under a brooder light and warm them back up and only lost one. Hope things start looking back up for you.

Quote: Thanks. We are ok though. I've got around 30 Orloffs in the breeder pen and only keep a dozen or so through the winter and still have two large hatches left in the incubator plus a few in the grow out pen. I just hate losing any. I always feel personally responsible.

Plus you never know when that "perfect" one will pop up, I always think it might be one of the ones I lost.

Had a guy stop by today and wanted to pick up 60 this Friday.

It ain't happening! Might scrape up 20 or so.....

If I had 60 to sell, no one would be interested in any.

Ain't that the truth. I sold a bunch two weeks ago and I'm selling a couple this Friday. Do you ever sell hatching eggs? I'd love to get some from you sometime!

We got our NPIP certification last spring so we can ship eggs and chicks, but haven't started selling any except to local buyers yet. I shipped out a few orders of eggs just for practice, but won't be selling any until at least spring. I've still got a long way to go on my Orloffs before I'll call them anything other than project birds.

Been banging around the idea of importing a new strain. Just can't decide because it's pretty expensive and a real pain in the butt. I have imported reptiles in the past though, so know the drill.
