You're absolutely right. You can't get a barred pullet from a solid roo sire. The barring allele is only on the male X chromosome, why it is so easily used for sex linkage with a solid colored sire. But a Rustic Rock pullet is barred,I don’t think so.
Can't be. Any barred hen must have a barred or cuckoo sire. Rustic Ramblers have solid BCM sires, perhaps a Cuckoo Marans?it probably is the same thing as a rustic rambler. I have two rustic rock chicks from TSC as well! good luck!
That still wouldn't get barring on the hens. XY chromosomes with a solid sire won't have a barred X for the daughters, since the mother gives her barred X ONLY to her sons. That cross sounds like an F2 cross back to the RIR?I think I read somewhere that they were experimenting with a RHODE Island Red over Barred Rock cross. Should be a good cross!
For those who purchased rustic rocks at TSC, does anyone else think they might have gotten a rooster? Are they sex linked?I recently purchased a few pullets that were labeled Rustic Rocks. They are small black chicks with a yellow dot on top of their head. I cant seem to find any information about this breed or cross on google. I was thinking maybe Maran and Barred Rock cross. Does anyone know what cross this consists of?
TSC's advertising image shows a barred hen very similar to a Barred Plymouth Rock, so they must have a homozygous barred father giving both daughters and sons each his Z-linked barring allele (otherwise the daughters would not have any barring since even barred mothers only give the barring allele to their Z-chromosome sons.) They seem to be keeping it secret, but a spot should be on both genders' heads to indicate the barring. If they are a sex linked cross, perhaps the size and placement of the spot is the indicator? For those who purchased rustic rocks at TSC, does anyone else think they might have gotten a rooster? Are they sex linked?
