Sad Day!!! UPDATE ****PICS OF NEW ROOSTER**** BEWARE OF SNAKES!!

Quote:
I got him for $8 from a local man. The man lives in a subdivision and has a lot chickens in a descent sized house but I don't think they were ever able to go outside. You can't free range on half an acre in a subdivision in Raleigh and he had no type of run.

My new guy loves that he's outside. He loves grass and weeds, oh and green beans I feed him from my garden.

I read that Dominiques are very rare chickens. A site online said they are on the CRITICAL list (the spot before ENDANGERED!) I may try to find a few hens and breed them.

He sounds like a lucky guy now that you have got him! You have probably thought of this, but you might want to check him for mites and lice, if he was inside all the time, with several other chickens. Just a thought.

What do I do to check him for lice and mites? Do I just move his feathers around and look for bugs? I've never done that before.

Thanks for bringing that up, I never thought of that.

He is very beautiful! I hope he lives up to baby Bok Bok's standards.
As far as mites, etc., check for them at night with a flashlight. I guess they are more active and easier to find that way?

Quickly part his fuzzy feathers on his backside, below his vent. Have good light when you do this, as some of them are sorta fast. The lice will be little longish white things that crawl. 1/4 inch long or less. The mites will be VERY tiny brown specks, and they will also run. And sometimes there are little white dry "globs" on the base of some of the feathers. These are the eggs, and if you see them, then you have them, even if you aren't fast enough to spot the live ones. LOL
If you find them, there are many different ideas on here as to what to do for them. I dust their backsides with 7 garden dust. This gets them. Some think you shouldn't use a dust, and should use something organic, which works slower (in my opinion--if at all) Some of the things help prevent getting them, but my feelings are that if you have them, might as well get rid of them quickly. Maybe others will step in here with their experience.

I've been reading about DE. Will this help with parasites? I'm what you would call a newbie, this is my first flock ever!

It still sucks that I lost my first roo ever. I've learned though that being ticked at that snake or crying all day for my baby won't help anything. He's gone but I'm left with great Bok Bok memories. Colonel Bok Bok is now here to replace Sgt Major's job not to fill the hole on my heart. I will always be sad about my lil baby roo but I hope to make happy memories with the Colonel.

I got Bok Bok (a RIR) to breed with my other RIRs and my Barred Rocks (with the Barred Rocks to make Black sex links). If I breed the Colonel with my Barred Rocks what will that make? Barred Rocks with rose combs or Dominiques with single combs?

Black snakes sufficate (spelling?) their pray then swallow it whole. If a black snake took your full grown hen that would have to be one GIANT snake. I wouldn't rule out a black snake on a young one (of course since it happened to me) but not on the one that was torn apart.

I have a new found hatred for snakes now. Black snakes are the worst to. When I was about 13 years old a 6-8 foot black snake chased me and now at 24 years old they still freak me out. My sister had 2 ball pythons and I was fine with them, I held them and let them on my shoulders but F*** a black snake!!!
 Oh my.well. he is the 2nd black snake I have found on my property.........and he was small....compared to my gigantic first experience...........I didn't think they could take the big hen,,,just so curious why nothing was left.......as for the little ones......we have hawks that will come by everyday hoping to catch one........I tried to post pic.even downsized with no luck, any suggestions anyone?
