About 2 weeks ago I lost 6 two month old babies and I have been devastated. I put them out with the adults some during the day to get some fresh air and then would bring them back into the house. Well they all started to have bloody feces and then were dead within two days. I have always fed medicated chick starter and once I saw the first blood, started them on sulmet. But it was just so fast. I questioned at first whether it really was cocci but I found a long thin worm on a piece of plastic in the pen a few days ago, so I am guessing they were infested with some type of worms, but man was it a fast thing. They were very nice and were going to add so much to my flock. Here is a pic of the worm I found.

as you can see it was very long, but very thin. I put a little sulmet on it in the bowl and it died. And I am treating everyone with sulmet now, but what else can I do. It has been so muddy and wet here. The rain has finally stopped but it will take time to dry and there is no sand available anywhere. Any suggestions? No illness in the other birds so far. But I have some more babies in brooders that will have to eventually go outside. What do you do when you brood babies inside and then move them out to help keep them from getting sick? Thanks.

So sorry for your loss. I can't believe you found that worm. Glad everyone is on sulmet. Best of luck to you.

I believe that's a roundworm and I don't know that Sulmet treats those. Wazine does though and I would worm the whole flock. Just add the appropriate amount of Wazine to their drinking water.

So maybe this is a silly question but I guess round worms are not round??? Is it typical for a chicken to pass on so fast from worms? In this case it was only 2 days.

I don't know that they died from round worms. I just thought it was odd to find one of these crawling around near the pen. I am sure the contracted cocci and it built up each time I put them out for fresh air and then it just hit them hard. They did not show any signs until the day before the first one died. It started having runny, bloody poop and then was dead the next evening. I am jus so upset. I don't wantto put my other youngsters outside until I am sure what I am dealing with. I thought the medicated food was suppose to help keep them from getting cocci?

That's a round worm. Wazine is the way to go. Sorry, Marie, I found one of those this summer and wormed everyone. I just can't believe that 2 month olds would have an infestation that bad.

I think they were infected with cocci, not round worms. But I am no expert obviously. Cam I treat with wazine while treating with sulmet? Should I treat with sulmet at all if none of the others have any symptoms of cocci? Could the youngsters have died from something else besides cocci?

that doesn't look anything like the round worms that dogs get. So, does that mean that chickens have their own "species specific" round worms? Dog round worms are much thicker and they are white. they look a lot a like spaghetti. Some people at the shelter I work at won't eat spaghetti any more after we had a litter of pups come in with round worm infestation!!! GROSS.
