About 2 weeks ago I lost 6 two month old babies and I have been devastated. I put them out with the adults some during the day to get some fresh air and then would bring them back into the house. Well they all started to have bloody feces and then were dead within two days. I have always fed medicated chick starter and once I saw the first blood, started them on sulmet. But it was just so fast. I questioned at first whether it really was cocci but I found a long thin worm on a piece of plastic in the pen a few days ago, so I am guessing they were infested with some type of worms, but man was it a fast thing. They were very nice and were going to add so much to my flock. Here is a pic of the worm I found.
as you can see it was very long, but very thin. I put a little sulmet on it in the bowl and it died. And I am treating everyone with sulmet now, but what else can I do. It has been so muddy and wet here. The rain has finally stopped but it will take time to dry and there is no sand available anywhere. Any suggestions? No illness in the other birds so far. But I have some more babies in brooders that will have to eventually go outside. What do you do when you brood babies inside and then move them out to help keep them from getting sick? Thanks.
