Sally's GF3 thread

A friend of mine lives in Allegan County, MI. She texted me that Allegan County Health Department is telling people not to shovel, as they might have a heart attack. She said they didn't specify any group of people, like those with heart conditions, just "people."

I think Allegan County wants to help the economy: snow blowers cost more than shovels.

I wave to them with a single finger. I got a great cardio workout shoveling. Later, I'll go workout on my elliptical.
My grandfather died while shoveling snow, was in his 50's. That was the year before my parents got married.

Sorry to hear that. Yes, it can certainly be dangerous for some people.

It was (according to my friend) a blanket recommendation not to shovel snow. Hubby was wondering if the snow packs down to ice, would a slip and fall be less dangerous? If you can't get out of your driveway to go get meds at the drugstore, is that better?

I just wish they'd caution people about doing things, not tell them not to. "If you have or suspect you have a heart condition, be very careful about shoveling snow or other strenuous activity."

My friend has been known to run to hyperbole about various things she reads on the internet. I get out the salt shaker sometimes when I listen to her.

Oh, I misunderstand. They told, demanded people not shovel?
I'm not sure exactly what the verbiage was. My friend said, "Allegan County Health Department is telling people not to shovel." I'm getting this second hand, and yeah, she can take things out of context and leave out some details.

Since our ground isn't quite frozen, the snow on the bottom is compacting into ice. If we don't get that out of there, we'll be stuck here until it thaws.

We didn't own a snow shovel for more than 20 years and so when we did get white stuff we used a broom, for ice we used a spade.

While on a trip up north in 2017 for my MIL's funeral a storm moved in, so I picked up a small snow shovel which I still have.

Just wanted to revisit the egg theory:gig :yesss:
Well, it is actually something I found about boiling, and peeling eggs the easy way.
Boil the eggs for total of 6½ minutes from start of boiling water.
At 4 minute period, take out and place a small crack into shell.

Place back into water and finish the remaining 2 minutes
Then when cooled, they peel easy.

I went up to the green house today. The tote with water in it is a huge block of ice, floating in a bit of water. The kale seedlings might be all toast. There is one spinach seedling, and it looks like it might be ok. Supposed to get below zero F Friday night/Saturday morning. Then a big warm up.

Walking up the hill in almost knee-deep snow was work, like working out on a stepper. There was some wind too, and I put out my arms for balance.

I thought I should make growling, Rrraaahrrrr! abominable snowman noises, but I didn't. :lau

This is not my house. These people go south every winter, and the neighbor has his truck parked there. He needs his truck on Sunday. Hubby said he'd go out with the snowblower "sometime." He said he can't take the Falcon plow back there, because it's just too risky with the Falcon's weak-ish brakes.

There are things that are going to take up his time between now and Sunday, so I went out to see what I could do.

For some reason, I was in a GROUCHY mood today, and I thought I'd just clear the foot of snow off some of the truck. Something to do to work off my grump and see some sunshine, which would also help my mood.

You can't see much of the truck; it's behind trees near the house. I couldn't reach the middle of the roof, so I did what I could.

I was still grumpy, so I started shoveling. I made a two-track, and then realized that the "cow catcher" under the front bumper wasn't going to clear the snow. It's going to get to zero or even below tonight, so that snow is going to turn to ice.

I'm in a MUCH better mood now! :lau
