Salmonella from chickens?

We have always been faithful in washing after contact with the chickens, but is salmonella a prevalent thing when handling chickens/eggs??
 
Food safety rules tell you that you should always wash hands after handling. As far as I'm concerned this applies to potential food as well! Even if you never plan on eating your chickens.
Seriously, it's just common sense to wash hands after most jobs.
