Salmonella in backyard chicken eggs USA News

Glad that testing is increasing in precision. How many tomatoes were destroyed, in `08, owing to the `scare' (Congressional hearings on the matter no less). Little press when the source turned out to be jalapenos grown at a specific location in Mexico:

Now, about those house cats

Good
hand washing and thorough cooking and 99.9% of food borne illness disappears.

Came across some interesting info. while reading the FDA Vs. Bayer case (FDA won - Baytril was nixed for Chooks). A study stipulated to (both sides agreed) concerned the much higher percentage of individuals who developed GI distress, owing to Campylobacter, who had eaten chicken prepared in restaurants, than those who handled/cleaned/prepared chicken at home. The finding was that the infection was passed, not from chicken, but from filthy human wait staff... FYI

One
of the recent articles (only one - there are too many to count) discussing antibiotic resistance in bacteria and subsequent development of immunocompromised people.

I want to THANK everyone for their opinions on this USA today article. Personally, I do see and treat people with Salmonellosis, from a variety of sources, none of which have ever been exposure to a backyard chicken. Interesting, that Salmonellosis did actually come from backyard chickens, somewhere. I have to suspect that confinement had a lot to do with it, just like puppymills result in diseased puppies?

I have raised over 100 chicks in the house and never had a problem with Salmonella. I dont have small children at home now and when the grandkids come over they are not allowed to handle the babies or adults. My grandson likes to check for eggs and washes his hands after. I on the other hand am not so good at that but havent had a problem. I dont wash the eggs either. I believe it takes the bloom off and then bacteria can get in. I sell eggs to neighbors and tell them they are not washed so do it right before you use them.
