Salmonella outbreak in backyard flocks .....

I think the increase in cases is due to so many new chicken owners trying to prepare for the covid nonsense, just as there are many more first time chicken owners here on the forum.
Yes, worse this year....but this comes out every year.

If you're good about washing your hands after handling them, and not putting them in your mouth, handling your used muck boots, etc... you're fine. It's a lot of hype - many salmonella cases don't come from backyard poultry, but rather food processing issues, contaminated produce, etc.
Many cases do come from BY flocks and the ignorance of handling livestock.

Fact about eggs, & Salmonella: Only 1 in 1 million eggs will be infected with salmonella, contaminated egg cases are rare, but are somewhat more common in store bought eggs, since the hens kept at many egg farms are not treated with care, & kept in unsanitary conditions. They are in contact with mice, which do carry the Salmonella bacteria.

Anybody who owns chickens, & have mice running around are more likely to have Salmonella in there flocks. But mice aren't the number one cause. Its contaminated water, which is drank by the mice, & the mice poop everywhere the chickens eat, & drink, therefore infecting your flocks. Chickens aren't born with Salmonella, if the bacteria was in the egg while a chick was developing, the chick would die before ever hatching.

It is about basic sanitation, which does not include kissing chickens, or missing that so important hand washing!
Not so many years ago, there was a nationally advertised hatchery who sold infected chicks over more than one year. Not a good story, and people did get sick.
I cringe when i see those 'cute' pictures of young children kissing chickens! It's so true that most of us have been less than careful many times, but once in a while bad stuff can happen.

Oh I'm sure they do, but a relative drop in the bucket compared to overall numbers if that article was accurate. And just saw this, onions responsible for an outbreak: https://news.yahoo.com/cdc-says-another-salmonella-outbreak-144644575.html
I'm very perplexed by this onion recall as I've already eaten 3 red onions from a newly purchased bag with no issues. Perhaps I need to play the lottery! Am hesitant to toss the rest & they're in the onion box with the Vidalia & yellow onions too - they're all commingling.
