San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Quick question! Has anyone ever had a problem with roos killing a hen? I suppose the problem is that they are so very big and the hens are tiny and they continue to attempt to mount the poor girl at the same time. Seems as though she is a favorite.

Anyway, we will be culling her tomorrow. Our first cull. Ah.

If anyone is interested in one my of roos, please let me know. He's a JGxSilkie mix, very large, aggressive/protective of the flock. I've had him as an egg along with his brother, but, after this problem with the hens, we need to rehome him or cull him.

Is the hen hurt so bad that she needs to be culled?

Anyone interested in a lovely Black Australorp roo?

He's about 1.5 years old. He's been the sire to my "Midnight Star" chicks (BA x Barred Rock black sexlinks), but I lost my BR girls to a predator, and I don't have much time anymore for the chick business, with my "real" job.

I'd like to find him a home, rather than a stew pot. I have plenty of people I know would take him for the latter. Plenty of his male offspring have gone that route.

We hatched him under a broody from hatching eggs I got from Gail.

He's got a nice big comb. His name is Mr. Sleepy.

PM me if you are interested. I may not be the fastest reply in the world, but I will get back to you.

LAFreewayChickens - So sorry to hear about the predator. Do you know what it was?
Do you still have legbars?
I know what you mean about the "real job" thing.

This just goes to show that SUPER OLD eggs hatch just fine!
We had a COUPLE hatch.

Anyone need chicks? The marans and black ameraucanas would be great for 4H

Phage,

Pretty sure it was coyote(s). My breeders are at Wild Willow Farms, down in the TJ river valley.

I still have Legbars. The two I got from you, Edward and Penelope, and then I traded Rye Ranch some chicks last December. So I have two pens, one with the original two and then two girls from Rye Ranch, and another with a Rye rooster and two females that are second generation from the original pair. Only one is laying right now, they others were molting and now taking a winter break.

BTW, I should post this to the Legbar thread or in a new thread, not here, but I have one rumpless legbar that I think must have been a sport (i.e. mutation). I am interested in selling her if you or anybody want a unique breeding project. She hasn't started laying yet, but unless there is something also "different" about her reproductive tract, she should start soon.

That is really interesting about the rumpless legbar because the blue egg gene was introduced using rumpless arucanas. I have never heard of it re-appearing in the legbars! I would post it on the legbar thread.
Sadly I cannot take on any more projects as am already struggling with the ones I have.

Phage, i don't "need" any chicks.... but literally was just talking about wanting marans and ameracaunas specifically and that i was going to do 4h @ japatul as we moved to descanso now... lol im taking your post as an absolute sign that i must have some.
