Necropsy at the San Bernardino is free. The preliminary report comes back in just a few days, the final report after all the tests are run takes about 2-3 weeks. Just bring your dead bird in as fresh as possible. You can also bring in a sick bird and the will euthanize it and perform the necropsy.

Awesome, thank you both SO MUCH for this information. I've been occasionally losing birds of one particular breed. THey are in with others, but the other birds are never affected. And the birds I've lost have been the same breed, but from different sources. It's weird, and sad, and frustrating.

Does anyone know where to get a necropsy done on a chicken here in San Diego County, and about how much it costs? I'm in Vista, but can go wherever. Don't need it at the moment, but have lost a few birds mysteriously, and want to be ready to do an investigation if it happens again. Thanks!

Just wanted to add that if you wanted special tests like for Mareks they do charge for that, but if the cause of death is obvious they won't need those tests.

Someone just asked about necropsies on FB, here's some info copied and pasted:

"Necropy update.....www.cahfs.ucdavis.edu...fill out and print form...use FedEx # 364343981....if they ask what it is say a diagnostic sample....do not freeze bird...cold pack only..send to 105 W. Central Ave. San Bernardino Ca. 92408. 2113.... Its no charge except they will sen the shipping bill to your home.."

I keep this info. in my "private messages" in a folder I named "medical" so that I can refer back to it. I haven't needed it so far, but know the day will come.

I have a rooster that needs to go. He is wonderful, but I'm not allowed to keep him in the burbs. He has been hand raised by 4 loving kids. He is an EE. He was born around 8/15/13. I have a young flock and everyone is healthy. He was vaccinated for Mareks. No stifles or sickness in any chickens around here. I hope to find him a good home. We are in 92129 zip, off 15/56 freeway interchange. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks so much!!

Posting this for Bowman's Birds

"Due to divorce, I'm going to be selling my entire line of show quality silkies. I'll be taking pictures tomorrow of everyone. I have 1 buff rooster, 3 buff hens, 1 blue partridge hen, 1 blue partridge rooster and 1 black birchen rooster. All the roosters except for the buff will be free to good homes. The others will be priced depending on quality and number bought. I am in San Diego, local pick up preferred.
"

If you're interested please PM me, Knock Kneed Hen, for the contact information. Thanks

I have a de uccle hen. She was born in February and still has not laid an egg? All her other bantam buddies a seabright, Cochin, 2 Dutch have laid eggs and all of them went broody and they all are mamas and she has not even laid an egg? Is she hiding them somewhere?

So my two Dominique's are 5 1/2 months old now and getting to the egg laying stage and have been acting...well, horny. Like my cat before she got fixed. They'll run over to me, get low to the ground, fluff themselves up and stick their booty in the air. Anybody else have hens that do this? These are my oldest in the flock and my first flock, just wondering if this is normal...or are they just weird? Thanks!
