San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

If anyone is looking for chicks just now I have a large hatch of a variety of fun breeds (purebred). They are super nice. Most are bantam.

So far I identified:

black cochin,
mottled cochin
standard white crested black polish
silver laced Sebrights
gold laced Sebrights
a couple of LF easter eggers

and a bunch of others
They cold be:
Black Tailed White Japanese, White Silkie, Black Silkie, Golden Laced Cochin, Barred Cochin, Partridge Cochin,, Buff Cochin, Red Cochin, Black Frizzle Cochin, White Frizzle Cochin. Norwegian Jaerhorn,

Just PM if interested :)

I have a three-week-old black Isbar chick ( I believe it is a boy) that I would like to trade for a Basque cockerel. If interested, please PM. The chick was hatched from KYTinpusher's eggs and I believe her flock came from Greenfire.

Any ideas where I can get pine shavings in bulk around San Diego? I live in Southern Chula Vista. I want to switch my coop bedding from hay to pine shavings. The hay stays wet way too long and since we're heading into a cooler season I'd like for my birds to have something that won't end up soggy. Thanks!

I have Not searched out bulk in a very long time.... But for what its worth I prefer Rice hulls.... They are naturally water repellant and dont pack down when they DO get wet. They always have a teeny bit of rice in them so the chcikens love stirring it up looking for bits.

For what its worth those bags whether they are shavings or hulls contain A LOT of bedding.... Its compressed.

I used one bag to bed down two partitions in my coop which covered 12 x 12 square feet about six inches deep.

Where can I find rice hulls? In all honesty, I just wanna move away from using hay for bedding. The chickens may have fun with it, but it smells once it's soiled lol

Personally I'd switch to construction sand. I did, and it was the best thing EVA!! LOL BUT, if you really want Pine shavings, Tractor Supply carries the large flake and it's reasonably priced.

You are all cordially invited to the first Annual (Maybe) Lake Elsinore, CPP/BYC South meet-up. The date is November 15 and the location will be at Lakepoint Park, at 420 E Lakeshore Dr Lake Elsinore, CA. 92530. Starts at 10am until dusk. There are trees, a playground, restrooms, and a limited amount of picnic tables w/bbq's (3 in the area). Plenty of parking, but will have to make an aprox 100 yard walk. The spot is overlooking the lake and the weather should be perfect. So come one, come all and tell a friend and pack a picnic lunch.
Feel free to add what you're looking for or what you want to bring. And please share the tread. Any questions, PM me... Thanks...
