San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Thanks for that flower! That was very nice of you. I bet my chickies would have voted for me, but you never know. lol
It's all in fun anyway, I'm surprised I made it to 4th, there were so many really great drawings from people I thought were much more talented. I'm just happy I can say my daughter and I have pics in the BYC Official Coloring Book. How neat is that?

I voted for you too.

My question to the group is re: organic feed. I have been paying crazy shipping costs for the countryside naturals feed. The girls love it and I have found that there is a significant reduction in poop smell and clean-up is very easy. However, the cost has become an issue. I bought some organic pellets locally and they will not eat them. Is anyone buying feed locally that is soy-free and in mash form? Any thoughts on other (non-pellet) organic feed that would be worth a try?

Chickens turn their beaks up at new stuff but eventually when they feel adventurous they will give it a try and eat most anything when they get around to it. Wait awhile before you get radical.

My girls are quite adventurous with their foods. They eat almost anything. I haven't had any of my LF girls turn down anything yet.

I gave them a cup of yogurt yesterday. I usually put it in a shallow dish, but I didn't feel like getting dishes dirty, so I just let them eat it out of the cup. They had strawberry yogurt all over their combs, chins, and wattles. I took some pictures, but I haven't downloaded them off my camera yet. It was really funny. I also have a trio of "Scratch Bandits" that jump into the scratch bin when I leave it open. They have a party in there until they get caught, when they see me coming, they scurry away and pretend like they're doing something else. Such characters! I think that's why I love my chickens so much. I'll post some pics tonight, when I get them off my camera.

Sunny, I'm with you - I love watching chicken antics, so much entertainment! Your post made me

I read about it here on BYC. I buy from Azure Standard and they sell Cascade Organic Feeds. I use their Starter and Grow Mash now. The chicks and chickens like it alot. That is saying ALOT because I have very picky chickens. I have to say that the starter mash has a strong smell, they use fish meal but the grow mash smells fine. Their products do not have corn or soy. They use peas. You can call Azure Standard for a list of drop offs. You spend $50 and there is not a charge for shipping. The last I looked 50lbs cost around $28 and change. Oh, they only sell mash and not pellets but Azure sells another brand called Rogue. Hope that helps.

I have seen some recipes floating around here lately of mix it yourself organic feeds. You might key organic into the search area and see what you get. The people in there seemed to feel their recipes were far better and way cheaper than the over the counter mixes. They also talked about feeding sprouted food too which seemed pretty easy to do. I want to do that one because Where I am after spring there is very very little in the way of green growing things.

I am acutally considering doing something called Duck Ponics. To grow tidbits for the chickens.... Still in the nebulous areas of my brain now though. Also I have eighteen acres to putz around with.
