San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

perchie.girl :

I have seen some recipes floating around here lately of mix it yourself organic feeds. You might key organic into the search area and see what you get. The people in there seemed to feel their recipes were far better and way cheaper than the over the counter mixes. They also talked about feeding sprouted food too which seemed pretty easy to do. I want to do that one because Where I am after spring there is very very little in the way of green growing things.

I am acutally considering doing something called Duck Ponics. To grow tidbits for the chickens.... Still in the nebulous areas of my brain now though. Also I have eighteen acres to putz around with.

I have all kinds of problems with organic feed here too! I just wouldn't know WHERE to buy organic grains and stuff, there aren't any mills around here... are there?

Perchie- have you seen our thread with the aquaponics and my aquaponics website page?

YES I have seen your website independantly while looking up Water purification system. I am impressed. No I havent seen the thread yet. I am still wandering about trying to gather information. I have only been posting at BYC for about a week now.

No there are no mills around here but there are quite a number in California. There may be one or two in Imperial County. There could be a way to form a co-op for ordering and have it delivered to someplace here. I dont feed horse grain so have never fooled with it. Id be happy to look into it. Are you going to be at the Meet up?

OK here is the manufacturer website and replacement parts for the Lyon Technologies which makes the Roll-X.

http://lyonusa.com

I took a quick look around their website and they have quite a selection of parts..... And OMG they are in Chula Vista. If they dont have the parts in their catalog I bet you if you gave them a call they would have parts for old models lying around. This has been my experience dealing with manufacturers. Good luck Going back now to see what more they have Very interesting website

I do get the picture, but there is no way that what you see is what you think it is.... I have a feeling that you might have a parasite problem in your chickens digestive system. Even though you may just have seen the occasional one, it does not mean that there are not more. I remember you mentioned that you were feeding redworms or grubs and those will carry parasites and will pass it to your chickens. That was another big reason for me to breed my own mealworms just to have a safe source of protein for my chickens. Of course they do free range and they eat bugs, but at least I can minimize the risk.
You mentioned that you only have two chickens at this point. If you like to come over and get some dewormer for your girls, just give me a call, because I seriously doubt it that what you see are non-digested mealworms.

Flower: I will be more than happy to get your chickens some mealworms. Just let me know..... (haha, was just thinking of something {evil me

}: I just had a movie producer asking me if I would be able to provide enough worms to fill up an entire car....... maybe that is what we should do with your neighbor......)

I am really interested in growing greens and tidbits using Aqua ponics. UM er Duck ponics.... I am planning a new coop and could build chicken safe water trenches along the fences for Nibbly stuf. That would justify me getting some ducks too. I really like the looks of runner ducks. I used to do aquariums and know about how to do the water pumping and Aerobic and anerobic bacteria and the use of Gravel and or large surface area filter medium. Plus I could raise some fishies too...

Hi! Yes I got some others saying the same thing. It's my inexperiance! I've been checking today and her poo is fine. A little mucus but that may be normal according to pictures I checked out. Both they're vents are nice and clean and they're eating and drinking great. I will continue to check her poo.
Thank you so much for the offer. Some of the things I've read have said to treat all your birds for worms just for health reasons. What do you think?
