San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Mine will be free ranging once she's out of quarantine. The funny thing is that the only chickens that have taken any interest in her are my Naked Necks. They were hanging out in front of her pen inside the garage today. Wonder if they think it's their mother?

I'm hoping I won't have any trouble with her wanting to take off with the wild turkeys. Her wings are clipped right now as the previous owner lived in Mira Mesa, probably not allowed turkeys, and she was flying up on the roof.

Get her a man & she won't want to fly away. :)

Here's a pic of my new turkey. Shes pretty mellow. The chickens don't want anything to do with her, but she would love
to be a part of the flock. I'd love to get a Tom Lynne. I just don't have a place to put one and don't want one more pen to
have to worry about. Maybe some day.

Oooh shes pretty.... I had never had Turkeys before so I kept my Tom and Hen in the coop with the rest of my birds. They were wild turkeys so eventually they preferred roosting in the tree just outside the coop door. Higher up. Eventually they moved their roosing spot just over my back door.

. My back door opens into a patio room. Above the door is a black pipe secured to the wall above and it makes an Ell to a support post for the patio roof. Originally inteneded as a place to hang a privacy screen (there were 21 women living in the house when I bought it and the room was used for bunk beds). They were about eight feet up from the landing and about ten above the finished floor of the room.

it was a great spot Roof over head easy to get to.... Till one day.... I was sitting at my computer desk by that door the sun had set... I was working on my book as usually and I heard a Mighty Crash. I still had moving boxes out in that room. I flipped on the light and down on the floor was MR T. Shaking out his feathers.... Mrs T was up on the perch looking down at him making baby bird noises... In about two flaps he was back up on the perch next to her... It was amazing...

sorry I digressed.

Pretty bird... I want turkeys again.

She's a Blue Slate Lynne.

Deb, this one has a wing clipped at the moment. I do hope to be able to integrate her into the flock. I don't really want her
on my rooftops or car roofs. Dave will kill me!! He already complains about the pretty little green and white packages left
on the deck for us by the chickens.

Hello all! Do any of you guys keep ducks as pets (IE- not for food!) I have been tossing around the idea of rehoming my ducks.....my female (a rouen mix) is pretty loud, and though the neighbors haven't said anything, i feel really bad about all the racket she makes. She's a great layer and a sweet bird, but I think she'd be happier with access to a pond or lake (and not kiddie pools or showers, like I've been doing.)

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to rehome them, but if I do it will definitely only be to someone who won't ever turn my kiddos into dinner. I have a female Rouen, and 2 males: 1 Shetland and 1 Pekin. The Shetland is an absolute DOLL, and the Pekin is a chubby little marshmallow that picks on the chickens. Please let me know if any of you could offer them a good (forever) home, otherwise I'm going to start looking into installing a pond in my backyard for the kiddos. :)

Hello Friends!

I was hoping to get some advice/opinions. I'm considering making a move from the suburbs out to a more rural area (i.e. Jamul). I've been suffering chicken fever now for quite a few years and living in the suburbs and having to keep my limited chickens isn't satisfying my chicken math. Among other things, I want more space to grow my home grown veggies and fruits and possibly have a small vineyard.

My questions are these: What kind of changes should I expect living out in a place like Jamul, over living in the suburbs? What kinds of costs should I anticipate that most people don't pay in the suburbs (i.e. water pumps, wells, ????)

Thanks for any info and advice!

Gotta notepad? LOL. It really depends on the age of the house and the amount of Rustic you are willing to live with.

They will mostly be on well and septic.... Have both inspected. Unless they have been inspected recently. I bought land that happened to have a dwelling on it. I went conventional so I didnt get anything inspected.... didnt worry me because I knew that the house had had people living in it constatntly since it was built.

There are alot of places in Jamul that are off the grid. If you look at those find out about the solar panel system how long its been in and how old are the batteries.

Find out if there are trolls in the neighbor hood... Meaning Neighbors that tend to "guard" the road or Threaten to sue over property lines... I had one of those.

If you are on an easement make sure you find out if a deed to the easement comes with the purchase of your property. Then find out the rout of that deed. There may be several ways to get to your land but you will only have "rights" to use one. Same goes for others. Find out who has "rights to cross through your property.

For instance I can use a road called Starship lane.... but NOT Starship Street in order to leave highway 8. I made the mistake of going up Starship street and got followed by a white pickup truck till the woman was able to stop me. I got a polite chewing out. I was able to schmoose my way through without getting her mad.... but from then on I would never take that road unless necessary.

Also my land has an Easement for the road going through it. I cant fence on either side of that road within twenty feet of the surveyed center of it.... on either side. Then there is another easement that goes through my property and that is for the power lines. So Yep I have eighteen acres but a good five of it I cannot fence perminantly. Nor can I put a gate up to stop people from crossing through.

I havent had any issues with border patrol.... I dont have gates to keep livestock in. They are very good to check my place a couple of times per month but are very discreet. My place is two miles from Mexico so we see the border patrol alot.

I had to learn alot by trial and error with regards to my house and figuring out how it was plumbed, Wired, and telephones. Like i said I bought land....

for what its worth a new pump for the well ran about 800 dollars installed. So if your pump is say over ten years old expect to have to replace it eventually. This cannot be a DIY project either. Well pump replacement requires that they remove the well from usually around five hundred feet down. So it takes a crane arrangement.... Mine had been put in around 1990 and I had to have it replaced last year.

I have been in my place now for eleven years. Still learning new things.

Thank you for all the wonderful information! It's definitely things I need to keep in mind when looking for my piece of heaven!

She's pretty! I used to have a blue slate hen. Loved her! My turkeys, no matter how tame, tend to end up with the wild flocks. I've only raised wild turkeys for the past many years though. One female still comes back and hangs out with us once in awhile.
