San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Can anyone use a free brooder? I had a two story metal brooder that we took apart to make a table top brooder for my new chicks. Here's a photo of the one we made. The second photo is of the bottom half of the brooder that is available. The metal attachments on the sides can be removed. It's a bit worn and rusty in places and the wheels are rusted solid, but it makes a great little brooder. There are shields on the sides to keep bedding under control, a wire mesh bottom, and a good size access door. I use a plastic oil drip pan to catch shavings on the bottom on mine. My babies love it and it beats the heck out of my purple Rubbermade brooder. Please PM me or let me know on this thread if you are interested.

It seemed like an ETERNITY but one of the ladies don't know which but I got my first egg today.

Not a fart egg but quite obvious that it is a pullet egg. Quite dark. I put a nest box out and some fake eggs and my 2 Barred Rock Sista's were in there trying to eat the wooden egg and then look for food in the hay. Ah ya ya!

Nancy - awesome for you. The first one is always such a cool thing. I have four "teenagers" that are about 19 weeks old (BR and BSL) that I expect to lay any day. They have all the sudden changed from skittish to friendly and are doing the rooster squat. So exciting!

Whoop!!! First Eggs Rock!!

My Delaware that just started laying, has small eggs, too. I'm sure they'll get bigger with age. I got my first "soft egg" from one of my seasoned layers. Weird things aren't they! I think my daughter saved it somewhere in her room- just the membrane, not the yolk. It had a hole in it from a beak or toenail, and was leaking when we found it, so she squeezed out the insides.

Its such a beautiful day today! We got our school done early, and have been spending the whole afternoon with the flock, cats, & dogs in the backyard. I've been fertilizing all my plants today. Hey, my Daffodils are blooming!!!! I bought them in December, on clearance, for $1 at Walmart....knowing quite well that it was a longshot for them to grow and bloom being planted so late...I put them in just before Xmas, and WOW they are blooming!!! I LOVE daffodils. They are like a ray of sunshine in my garden.

I wish I would have had my camera, my beautiful chickens were pecking amongst the daffodils and roses. It doesn't get any better than this!.....except if one of them decided to lay a blue egg... then maybe it could get better.
