Well, as most of you know. My ladies have just started to lay. We are up to 8 pullet eggs now. Just a few more to go.

The other day, a black sex link was sitting on the eggs and got a little nasty when I went to get the eggs. Every time I went in she was there and I am like, it is not taking you that long to lay an egg. So I go and lift her out of there and told her that I do not need this broodiness because Roo Roo is gone. I think she was just practicing because I never saw her on the nest again.

You will be fine.

At this early stage I would leave her the way she is. Marking the eggs is an excellent idea. Disturbing her too much or even moving the nest at this point can break the broodiness. After a few more days you can lift her of the nest box (if you are scared of doing that use some garden gloves) and put her on the ground several feed away from the nest. She will relief herself, eat/drink and take a dust bath before going back to her nest. If you have the time to supervise her and the nest, that would be awesome. You do not necessarily want another hen taking over that nest or your broody returning to a different nest box. Has happened to me in the past, but without consequences, so do not be scared, it is more fun and super addicting.

Later on I have moved my broodies into dog crates with the nest and eggs, usually at night. You can put a piece of fabric in front of the door to give her some privacy.

One other thing I also do with my broodies as they are not laying anymore anyways for now, I treat them for any potential internal and external parasites - just in case, because "Motherhood" alone will let them loose a lot of weight. They always get some extra nice treats as well as they safe me the electricity of an incubator, egg turner, brooder.......

She's still going strong! I think I need to look up all the timeline info, and be ready for hatching (should it occur). Wow. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and help! We'll see where this takes us...

Dana, thank you SO much for the double yolkers!!
And thank you DH for taking them to work and meeting me.
This is totally fabulous. I have never had more than one at a time to work with, and due to the fragile nature of them it is tricky to get both embryos developing and stay developing. I just hope they behave themselves! This is fantastic!! Just let me know what type of chicks you would like when you are ready and I will get the eggs and hatch some for you.

Thank you Thank you Thank you

Sucks, I did not want my welsummer to be frustrated but why let her sit on eggs that are not fertile. And now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,since she know longer is longing to be sitting on eggs she is MAKING beautiful eggs once again. I tell ya for hatchery birds my two welsummers are my pride and joy since they have great personalities and lay wonderful, hugh red/brown eggs for me.

Anyway chicken psych therapists are all on vacation just now !!!!!!!!!
