How fun! Now the waiting begins... 19 days from yesterday is May 16. Mark your calendars!

Well - here she is. Seems quite happy in the rabbit hutch. I had the door open so she could see what was going on in the run. DH asks what I plan on doing should any chicks arrive?

It's 21 days, and most of the time they finish hatching on 22 and 23.

I had read before that 20 days was normal, but that broody chicks usually hatch a little faster than their incubator friends. My girl went exactly 19 days, with the 3rd probably hatching on day 20. (Not sure where I read that. I think maybe Crazy Huhn mentioned that to me, too?)

At any rate, it will be so great if she follows through!

Go Broody Mama! She looks very content sitting on that next.

DH was asking what YOU are doing should chicks arrive???? Well, make HIM building a bigger coop/2nd coop!!!

Dana, yes, it was me mentioning the 20 days under a broody. Of course the golden rule is 21 days, but out of my own experience my chicks under a broody usually hatched on day 20. I actually never had a chick hatched on day 19 and never later than day 21 and I had a lot of hatches under a broody...........

This is what I'd read that gave me the 20 day idea: http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Broody-Hens-1.html

It
was a pretty informative article that made me not quite so terrified of the whole chick hatching possibility. Missy must have been an overachieving broody!

My next big worry is when to introduce the broody + her chicks back with the rest of the flock. I'm considering just waiting until all my babies can go outside solo, and then splitting the coop in half again: babies on one side, and adults on the other. (The coop is big, and the youngsters would have outside access, too, until they could free-range with everyone else.) Any thoughts from the experts?

One more picture for you. This is my younger son Alex saying hi to the Ameraucana chicks, and vice-versa.
