Thanks again for the coffee sample. I didnt have to buy a grinder after all. I went through my little coffee Kiosk today held up my little bag of beans and asked them how long it would take to grind it. She just grinned and said about four seconds. Do you want me to grind it? I grinned and she disappeared and four seconds later handed me back the bag with the beans ground.

Oh and goina make coffee tomorrow....

I bet after you have tasted it, you will get your own coffee grinder and never go back to any other coffee......

Dana, Thanks so much for all of the fuzzy butt pics. Your White Rock is such a good mama. I highly doubt any of my ladies would just stand there w/ mealworms on the floor. Babies or no babies.

Just curious. Do you give the Modesto as a snack while they are free ranging? I have mine in a feeder and let the ladies get what they want. I go through so much of it that I am wondering if I should just do it as a snack. Hmmmmm.................

Well, if we're posting chick pictures, here's one of a killdeer chick I saw today. The parents were very calm and quiet even when I walked right up to the chicks (who weren't too keen on me getting too close. I guess daddy taught them well). I am naming them the "Quiet chicks". No, they're not chickens or domestic game birds and you can't legally own any, but I thought they were cute:

I just love all the baby pictures.

My broody is still determined. I have taken her off the nest twice today so she will eat. We did order 6 fertile eggs for her and should get them Wednesday. In the meantime, I am converting an old rabbit hutch and plan to put her in there. I will put the hutch in the enclosed pen with the other coop. She is currently sitting in the favorite nesting box (I only have 3) and it is a long walk to get food and drink; I'm also concerned about the others getting to the eggs etc. BTW, my broody is the lowest hen in the pecking order, so I worry on that level too. I would appreciate any input. Not sure what I will do with the babies (if we get that far) as I don't have room for more.....

Nancy - I use the scratch as a treat a few times a day. I blew through that stuff SO fast, I couldn't believe it! I can't leave any food down during the day as the brazen squirrels go right in my coop and eat it.

The White Rock IS a good mommy! She was taking those worms and giving them to the babies... it was very sweet. I have really enjoying watching her do her thing, although her babies are wild little children compared to the Ameraucana chicks.

Speaking of blowing through food, I am astounded how quickly I'm going through worms. It's chicken crack, I'm telling you!

Look at the legs on that killdeer chick! Stilts!

Empireranch (please remind me of your first name!) - the day I moved my broody from the coop to the tack room was the rare day she actually got up to go outside, and then the other chickens wouldn't let her back on her nest. She was much happier brooding in relative privacy, as I was out there several times a day checking on her. Once your girl gets her eggs, I'll bet she'll be thankful to have a little private space of her own.

Also - I'd never seen this done before, but it helped my girl: I put one of those clip on parrot cups right on the front of her nest box, so both food & water was easily accessible without her having to get up. She seemed to appreciate that. You can see what it looked like here:

I guess that you will have to build a new coop or get some room additions.......... I started with just one coop and now I am up to 3

Do not be worried about your broody being the lowest in the pecking order. She will stand up for herself and her babies - you will be surprised. I do like Dana's idea with the water cup and the feed in front of the hen, however, I have always lifted my broodies of their nests and eggs at least once a day until day 18, so they were able to relief themselves with some big broody droppings. They were eating and drinking and also taking a dust bath. Like I have mentioned in a post to Dana before: now is the time you can treat her for any potential internal and external parasites (dewormer and poultry dust). Broodies leave their eggs and nests for sometimes 30 minutes and everything will be OK. Just relax.

May I ask what kind of eggs you ordered? So "egg-citing", congratulations, great decision to let her have some babies.

Yes, who needs TV if you can have chickens. They are so entertaining and every day they look different and they are up to new adventures.....
