sorry! But I was hoping you guys could help me out here... I am about to start another thread for San Diego to get details on how many chickens everyone owns and what part of SD (or district) they are located at. I am trying to see if there is a way for me to get a small research project going here in San Diego locally via each person to help us finally take more steps to legalizing chickens in all areas of San Diego by reducing the ridiculous requirements of min ft a coop needs to be from a property etc. I am not sure what forum I would have to post this thread in but if I do find it I will post an update edit here with the details so that maybe you can go visit the thread and submit your details and let me know whether or not you would be interested in helping our cause to finally change the rules by volunteering a little of your own time and efforts by helping us complete this research project (details will be in the thread I make) thanks everyone!!!

EDIT: here is the link to my new thread! https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6583739#p6583739

I think I told you guys I was missing a Barred Rock the other night... well, last night's coop check brought a missing Black Polish and one of my little broody chicks. My big flashlight and I searched high and low, and found nothing.

This morning I did see a pile of B&W feathers, and knew that was the Polish. No sign of the cockerel.

About 9am (and in the bright sunshine), I hear the chickens going nuts, and I can see a scuffle in the bushes. I run outside and see a *HUGE* coyote IN my yard - he easily bounds my 6+ foot fence and runs off with a big Barred Rock in his mouth. I am shocked.

This explains why I've lost four chickens over the past few days. I've got my babies locked down in the coop, and all the adults locked up in the barn. I'm going to have to figure something out, as I'm sure this coyote thinks he's found an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Argggh. All the chickens are upset; it's a good thing I'm getting some worms from Anke today! That will make them feel better.

Yep now they know you have food in the yard the only thing you can do is build a roofed run if you dont have one. Six foot fence is only a deterrent. Can you put a strand of hotwire around the top of your fence? Put it where he has to hit it too before he gets close to the fence for a jump. Also If there is an overhang on the fence they go to seize up the fence for jumping or climbing and look up. They see the overhang and it looks like the fence is too tall.

Oh no! So sorry for your loss Dana!!! Stupid coyote!

Maybe you can use hotwire, or keep the chickens in the barn until he gives up. OR my favorite, get a really big dog that will keep him away!!!

Dana, I'm so sorry!! That is horrible! I worry about coyotes a lot at my house. I have seen them in my front yard, in my driveway, and just outside the backyard fence. I saw one the other night in a "standoff" with my neighbors cat. They were face to face, 15 yards apart, frozen, waiting for one to make a move... I pulled up the drive and my lights caught them. I hit the high beams and floored it, in hopes that my car would scare the coyote off, and save the cat. Fortunately it did work. They both ran off in the same direction, but I did see the cat on my roof not much later, so I know he was okay. But back to my chickens, my fences are only 4', so its an even easier jump. I resolved to only let them out of their coops when I'm home, and I can put my dogs out to watch them, or supervise myself. I still worry though. Why can't those coyotes be content with eating the squirrels??? There are thousands!! And I'm sure they taste just like chicken.

Dana - Oh boy that sucks! Time to get a big ass shot gun! I love all animals but he now knows where he can find dinner so he'll be back so there's not much else you can do.

So sorry.........

The Tweenagers progress report.... lol

As you know I got ten pearl and pied guineas from Cracking up and one Lavender from Tigerllllillly.

Well the little buzzards are poking down the food in great quantities.... They are beginning to get their pointy heads and teeny little cheeks. And I see a few polk-a-dot feathers but all in all they look like Tweenagers.

I am going to have to get them into their outside cage soon. Just have to put it together. I have 30 +- more coming from PeepsCA in a couple of weeks. Woo Hoo I am no longer poultry poor.
