San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Dana, I am so incredibly sorry about your losses to that coyote. The hot wire idea seems to be a good one. Also, there is a breeder of Great Pyrenees dogs just in Ramona. I have been told that GPs are great livestock guardian dogs and I had checked the breeder out in the past. His dogs were very beautiful, too, but my yard is too small for a dog like that, otherwise I would already own one.
Good luck with that bad guy!!!

LOL... I have plans on it. My next batch of chickens will be Sumatras or Sumatra eggs. Havent made my mind up on that one. yet but I have to get these guys brooded out first and I have my suspicions that Thirty Guineas are going to be a handful.... for now.

Dana - I too am sorry to hear about the coyote losses. I have an easement road along my property but between my shepherd mix and the neighbor's 3 german shepherds (who live outside 24/7) there is always a dog around and so far so good. I have 6 foot chainlink fencing and I recall seeing a product that was a "roller" bar that could go at the top to prevent the coyote from getting over the fence line - needless to say, I didn't persue that but it may be another option.

Thank you guys for all the good suggestions! We are trying to figure out what we want to do... we have a lot of fence line to deal with. I may end up looking for a second coop, and just building out more secure runs attached to that. (They are really pooping up my poor barn floors right now....)

In more exciting news, I won ALL THREE of Laurel's pictures yesterday! My little guy had enough by 2 pm, so my parents were nice enough to stay with my tickets. I am so excited - I love those pictures!

I need to look up what a GP looks like. With how hot it can get in Ramona, I was really hoping for a short-haired dog. I just looked - OMG - so cute! So fluffy... like big white labs. Not sure if I could talk my husband into a $1500 puppy, though.

Great Pyrenees are very very fluffy. They have a hair coat with a woolly coat underneath. I know people that have them in the city and they do well with a large back yard. Because they are livestock guardian dogs they do their job very well without supervision. But because of that nature they are a bit difficult to obedience train. And they definately must be kept in a fenced space whether its an acre or ten acres. I too have been researching LGD (livestock guardian Dogs) and the only breed I have found that has a short coat is a Kengal.

My problem with Pyrenees is that woolly coat. I am up higher at about 3100 feet on the west side of Jacumba just past Boulevard. We have Cholla cactus out here and it has earned its name of jumping cactus for a reason.

For now I am just building a nice hen house with a very secure run area. For 1500 (the cost of a puppy) you can build a Killer Run.

Another dog breed which is an alternative to GP is the Anatolian Shepherd Breed. Like all livestock guardianan dogs they are large mellow alof, large but have short hair if not crossbred. I would love to have one myself but can not justify it at this time. I have met some one in my area who raises them and may look for him some time in a future.
