go to the shelter, you will surprise your self!! I was an animal colrol officer here for a while in san diego, and it is really sad to be behing the scenes. there really are some great dogs that have just not been given a chance!! most of the dogs at the north shelter are pure bred and not so many pits etc, seeing as i know some people feel strange about pits.. With the economy taking a dive Hundreds of dogs are in shelter looking for homes, their owners lost homes etc, it is a horrible problem and unfortunetly the animals take the brunt of it!!

Not me with the mastifs but i do like the link you added, at least it is not a back yard breeder who does not do health clearences.. Those dogs on your link are OFA sertified and several other good find... i think the life span on an anatolian is upwards on 13 years which is fantastic for a large breed..

I am sure that both breeds are basicly wonderful. Was it Cara who mentioned the rescue centers having good animals that have just been discarded because the original owners can not care for them. I totally agree with that especially if you have the patience to visit frequently and get to know the animal. My german shepherd puppy is just right for me at this time. She was very scared at first and is really coming along nicely. But I still want an Anatolian. (again)

Animals were never part of my life until my son wanted a pet and now I truly appreciate the relationship between me and animals. They teach me so much and I would not want to be without them now. I will even miss my bossy, snotty white showgirl hen. She is so bad.

Wow - I am really surprised how much the Anatolians look like the Mastiffs! I did send my hubby the pics of Cari's Maya, and this was his comment: "The cat will never forgive us."

I have no problem with a rescue or shelter dog. I really need to do all my research now, so that I'm totally comfortable when the time comes to make a decision. (I will NOT be able to walk into a shelter and leave empty-handed; it's just not possible. I could easily cross the line into animal collector if I had enough money and space to do it properly!)

All I'm asking for is EVERYTHING: short hair, good with kids, smart, great watchdog, chicken friendly, horse savvy and scary to coyotes. Too much? Hee hee!

I'm all for rescuing animals, just make sure you can bring something along... rabbit? chicken? to see if the dog will get along with them. I've heard a lot of horror stories about people rescuing dogs and then having them attack their animals. As a general rule, don't pick hunting type dogs, or husky type dogs...
