San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hey I just went out to check for eggs and I got one!!! Whoo hooo!!! It was from the EE pen, where the roll-a-way is. Even though there was still a lot of hay in the box the egg did roll out the bottom enough where it was safe enough... It does look like there was a peck to it, but not enough to crack it open. Whoo hoo! First egg from that pen in over a month!!!

Artificial turf screwed or fastened down in the corners for egg protection.... You could also use a regular roll out nest box pad. Those you can buy online pretty inexpensively.

Great ideas guys, thank you. I will play around with different materials and see what works. Thanks again!

One of our hens stopped eating her eggs after we put up a "privacy curtain" on her nest box. We think that if she couldn't see the egg later in the day she wouldn't go in and eat it. That is of course if she is not interested in eating it as soon as she lays. Anyway, we just stapled a piece of fabric to the top of the entrance of the nest box and cut a slit up the middle so there are 2 strips hanging down.

hey san diego people!!! I have been asked by the board of the SERAMA COUNCLE OF NORTH AMERICA to get a proposal together for me and the golden state serama councle putting on the semi nationals here in san diego. Hi Nancy! Nice hearing from you! Have things calmed down a bit on your end?

I think just about everyone's chickens are on strike right now. I am just getting a few eggs here and there from my Ameraucanas and no one else. NONE from the EE/ OE pen!

Haha so none to eat for me! BUT on a good note I finally got the roll-a-way nest box built. I remember we were talking about them for the egg eaters... I'll go out and get pics of it in a few minutes for you to see.

I am pretty sure he's a boy... like 99% sure. He acts like a boy and is VERY hefty and has huge legs. I will post some pics for you now, it was weird out of all those eggs you gave me only 2 hatched.

I have Blondie's son and another one that is black that I am pretty sure is a female. She is cute, I just hope she ends up with a beard!

And here they are! Any guesses on who the father is for Blondie's baby, and the mom and dad of the black one?

The boy; He was born yellow and black striped, and is now feathering out, what looks like, black, white, and partridge...

The girl; She's all black with a little bit of white, I don't know if the white will stay after she gets her adult plumage though...

Cari, Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Been really busy. Still moving and had some personal business to attend to.

I think you are right unfortunately. Blondie's chick looks like a ROO.

He is a very cute fella. I really am stumped at who his father is though. I am guessing one of the EE's that hatched in Mr. Splashes hatch.

I am not sure if you remember but I mentioned that I had 2 surprise broodies. One was from Mahonri's hatch and she was super mom w/ 17 chicks and the best mom. Then there was a EE from Ideal that sat on alot of eggs and only hatched out 2. She was on the other end of the scale and was the worst mom. She refused to keep the chicks warm, I had to force her and 1 did die. The other is the sweetest but I am sure it is a ROO. I explain all of this because he is a mirror image of your female black chick so I think her mother is a Ideal EE and her father is backsidehole. My roo has feathered legs, does your female? Just curious.

Heya! Yes I KNOW he is a roo now as when I put fresh water in the brooder yesterday he was the first one up to it and did the treat call!!!! I have never seen it come from such a young one!!! Haha it was REALLY cute.

Yep I remember about the broodies... nope my little girl doesn't have any feathering on her legs.... if she did I would say it was the Marans as the daddy, but she is 100% clean legged, AND her legs are SOLID black, very dark and pretty... maybe EE/ something... I don't think she will end up having a beard though...

On another note, Mr. Splash is doing really well, he integrated seamlessly and although he is subordinate to Mr. Pink he has been hanging around the ladies and calling them for treats etc... he really is a good rooster, and cute to boot! I wish I could keep ALL the roos... there are so many good ones lately!!!

Cari, I am sorry that I am not like those people on Craigslist that can pick male or female chicks while still in the egg.

I swear I would have made sure Blondie's chick was a mirror image of her. She is the BEST.

I am pretty sure that your female mystery chick's mom is one of the EE from Ideal. Forgot to mention that they lack beards. Does Blondie's son have feathered legs? Too lazy to go back and look at the pics.

I am so glad that Mr. Splash is doing well. His brother has been banned and the the Lav roosters have been sneak attacking him. I may need another pen so I can keep them apart. It is getting way CRAZY in there. Need some peace. I seem to be the roo hatcher, so many roos. I really think I am going to give up the hatching bit. I have not gone in and paid attention to the 17 chicks. I play with them but I am trying my best not to sex them because I know I will have a heart attack. My dumb luck will give me 16 roos and 1 female.

Nancy
