San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Al, Alright, I think you should leave the growing of plants to me. I do not even think my Ancient Chinese Secret will help you.

But seriously, my mom and sisters cannot grow weeds. I was the only one w/ the green thumb. My mom has killed at least 10 champaca plants. One time I had to go to my sis's and house sit so I asked her if she needed me to water the plants and she said WHAT PLANTS? They are ALL dead.

My other sis, I planted them and all she had to do was water, ALL DEAD.

Now you know why my mom had no clue what Jerusalem Artichokes are.

Nancy, I could bring you cuttings from some of my fruit trees to trade for some blueberries & maybe cane berries? I have some Pluots- Dapple Dandy, Flavor Grenade, a SpiceZee Nectaplum (that is to die for), Lapins Cherry, Burgundy Plum, Arctic Star Nectarine, Red Fuji Apple, Winter Banana Apple.....and an unknown variety of apricot that was here when I moved in.

My orchard is full right now, or I'd take a fig. Do you have any dwarf figs, that I could keep potted?

Edit: My profession is horticulture, I've been a nurserywoman for the last 14 years...I'l have to quiz you Al, and see if I can figure out what you're doing wrong

Cari, I will bring all I have and you guys can just share. All you do is plop the root into the ground. Do not let it dry out or it will be done. And make sure you keep it contained. I cannot stress enough how invasive it is.

Sunny California, I think you and I made Dave Wilson's stock go up. I was just too lazy to list it out but I have the Dapple Dandy, Flavor Grenade, and Spice Zee- these are one of my FAVS, Burgundy Plum another of my FAVS. The Arctic Star did not deliver in my yard and I had it removed and a Snow Queen in its place. I have the red fuji too but it is not doing a whole lot here.

Not sure if you are interested but we seem to have the same taste and I have cuttings of my Splash Pluot. These are the BOMB. I can eat them all day long.

I may be interested in the Apricot. Do you know how it produces and taste? Is it a old variety or a hybrid?

I have Black Jack which stays small and I have Violette de Bordeaux. I have Celeste in pots and they do well for me. Although none of those are my favorite though. I have a thing for Peter's Honey and I have him in a pot and he does great.

All of my berry canes and blueberries are named. Do you want the names to make sure it is something you want?

Cari, Can you turn that coffee maker into a rice cooker?

These gourmet chickens like rice and my rice cooker is too small.

I cannot believe the things I am doing for these chickens. I know the dogs are jealous of them.

Yes! Dave Wilson has the best varieties! We did a fruit tasting event a couple years ago at the nursery I work at. It was great! I have no idea what my apricot is. It hasn't produced well for me. I don't think I get enough chill for it. I don't have any rootstock to graft the Splash to, I wonder if I can just stick it on one of my other pluots? Oh! BTW, I picked up the new Bella Gold "Peacotum"- Peach x Apricot x Plum. Its just a teeny tiny 2' whip, or I'd offer to share. Maybe next time I'll have some cuttings. Sure, bring me some figs. I'll try them on my deck and see how they do. Worse case scenario, I have to plant them on my back slope, and pray the gophers don't find them.

If your blueberries are any of the Southern Highbush varieties, I'll take em. I don't care what they are. The wild mockingbirds and jays usually beat me to them anyways. Any raspberry or blackberry would be fine too. I'm not picky.

Cari- You can feel free to ask me anything you like about the nursery industry.
