San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Newbie here has a couple questions - can you put small chickens (banties?) in the same coop as full size, will they get along? Do you eat the eggs from the small chickens?

I'm wondering b/c I have 4 now, and would max out at 5 (maybe 6?). I'd really like an EE to get some blue/green eggs, but I also like the pretty duccles. No plans yet to build a new coop any time soon. Any advice?

Sure you can. My small rooster is the boss, and the full size roosters are 6 time his size.

But I guess it also depends on timing. My small rooster was fully grown when I put the full size roosters in the coop when they were only 3 months old. It might not work if it was the other way around.

Eggs are eggs.

Enzolove, I'm going to try it. I have a large coop and run, my hens are nice and I added some hiding places including someplace up high that the bantams should be able to get to but the standards won't be able to. Yes, their eggs are just smaller. I want bantams for pickling eggs. BEWARE, wwmicasa1 will be bringing d'Uccles and you many not be able to restrain yourself!!

Personally, I wouldn't max out your coop with 6. I'd get either the one green egger that you want or two banties because they're fun, cute and you can have two!! If you get banties remember they are more susceptible to hawks getting them so if you free range you really need lots of hiding places. My mom has one banty hen and has hawks in the trees at her house all the time. The banty knows to hide in the bushes...although she screams and carries on the entire time she's there

.

See what wwmicasa1 has at the meet up and maybe that'll help you make up your mind.....plus if you take them home I won't be tempted as much!!

I think I found this post in the nick of time!! I live in Poway and would love to come to your party tomorrow.... Can I?? PM me if there is anything still needed and I'll stop and pick it up. I don't have anything that I really need to get rid of but am happy to bring soda or bottled waters or whatever else is needed! Also, does anyone have any EEs they're getting rid of? The only way I found this forum was because I had been searching CL for more chickens to add to my group of 11 and wasn't having any luck! So I googled and incredibly this forum was the top listing! (I googled san diego chicken breeders...) If anyone has any FBCM or will be getting any, I'd love to add some too! Please let me know! Thanks everyone!

Hi igotchickens! Welcome!! Sure, the more the merrier!! You might want to read the past few pages to see what people are bringing (chickenwise). The first page will have a list of what people have signed up for. The first page also has all the pertinent info, place and time. See your tomorrow!!

Nancy I can use any food you can bring, especially chick starters. I would love to try and grow some wild blackberries (with thorns!) they were my fav as a kid growing up.
I'm bringing duck eggs. Not sure what else you may want that I have.

I have:
*some blue/black split silkies, all black, I am getting a small percentage of lavender (I'm keeping) so these will carry the gene. Pretty sure these will be SQ.
*just one little SD Zoo Jungle Fowl baby.
*one serama roo BBR. teeny.
*one silkie/serama cross thats pretty goofy but cute. It's blue with silkie feathers/toes/eyes/skin but has a serama body!
*a splash silkie roo with great feathering.

If anyone is interested in any I have let me know and I will bring.

Hi Nancy (or anyone) I would be interested in most pure breed hatching eggs, especially "nice" ones.
Also the raspberry and blueberry plants.
Also any feed that tigerrrrrlilly does not want.

Tigerrrrrrrlilly, Okay! I got ya down. I have a blackberry bush that was in a pot and started to root in my front yard, I think I am going to give that one to you. It is very thorny so put it somewhere that you do not frequent, like at the neighbors house.

I would be thrilled w/ the duck eggs. It is ALL of your fault. I would have continued life not knowing how GREAT they taste in baked goods. If there is a good number of them, I may make salted eggs. Those are yummy too.

I will bring all I have and everyone can just split it up like we did last time.

Just happy that I have something this time that people want.

OK TOMORROW!!!... I am going to bring one 7 month serama pullet, and a few chicks looking for homes. I also will have all my eggs from this past week, I jus turned light on them so i only have as of today 6 eggs, from my one really nice pair. However my hatch rate on the 4 eggs i put in the bater a month ago was 100, one chick died in water bowl!!. But i will bring some of my adults so people can see them and TELL ME WHAT COLORS I HAVE. I am a dog person/horse person. I got in to the seramas as my first chickens, wow, not easy little creatures, hatch rate terrible, very fragile little animals.. ADORABLE though. I will four sure be there EARLY.. Interested in P fowl, and gunneas..

thanks Nancy, I'm excited about those blackberries!! I'm not good a growing I hope I can keep this one alive

. My banana tree from last time didn't make it after we had extreme heat, then sudden cold, then ton's of rain. I was soooo bummed out, it tried so hard to survive but flooding was the last straw and it gave up.

The feed will really help me out too, It's been hard keeping up with the feed bill lately for these little pigchickens I have. That's why I was thinking about selling my RJF flock to minimize.

I'll bring all the duck eggs I have in the fridge. I think theres a few boxes now.
