San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Is anyone doing anything special for the chickens during this cold snap?? My first winter with them and our coop is open at the top of two walls. The past couple of nights they pop out like it wasn't a big deal.....but I have been waking at night with worry

I did notice tonight when I closed them up that they seem to be sitting/roosting directly on the poop boards instead of the roost above. It is lower and has the closed wall portion next to it as opposed to the open air.
I am putting tarps over my openings. I am in Jacumba so its COLD there at night this time of the year. I did have one Wellie roo loose a couple of tips on his comb to frost bite. There has been a dusting of snow that has stayed everywhere there is shade for the past week. Mr Wellie is all healed his comb just a little odd looking right now.

Good to know. The open sides are on the walls that do not get a prevailing wind so they should be fine. They always sit all huddled together except for the Brahma who likes to be by herself in a corner.

Thank you both! Sorry about the little roo injury!!

Hello everyone! I live in Los Angeles but am in SD frequently and am looking for anyone in the greater LA or SD area that is selling showgirls. If you are, or know anyone who is, I would love to hear from you. Thank you!

Hi ChickensRDinos,

We will be looking for a ride for a puppy in March from Brea to San Diego. I don't have showgirls but I could give you chicks or hatching eggs if you are able to help out with puppy transport. Please let me know, thanks!

What is with the hawks right now. I have had two chickens picked off in the last month here in Temecula. We have tiny postage stamp sized back yards but ours has a ton of cover. And there are the biggest free range rabbits on our greenbelts. WHY?

Dang sorry for your loss..... I suppose cause chickens are easier to spot and target. And in a fenced back yard it would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

deb "note to self to locate those aviary nets..."

It's also winter and I read somewhere that during the cold season, chickens are more prone to raptor attacks due to food shortages.....

I suppose I'd be tired of rabbit meat every day too. Thank goodness the big run and coop will be done tomorrow. Sad though, she was my dumbest and nicest girl.

So sorry for your loss there! It always hurts to lose one. I've noticed more hawk activity after rainy days around here (Vista). I'm guessing the bunnies, gophers, mice and squirrels take cover, and the hawks are harder up for a meal.
